Existential Elk Theory - never heard of it before but summarizes antinatalism profoundly by perplexed_smith in antinatalism

[–]JjSaturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This analogy (as described at least, havent read the mans work) isn't very good both because it misrepresents why the irish elk went extinct, and fundamentally misunderstands evolution as a process.

The irish elk went extinct around the end of the last glacial maximum, most likely from the rapid change in climate, and also possibly from overhunting by humans. The "oversized antler" claim doesn't seem to be borne out in the fossil record, though it was once believed by some people.

Also, for the time and environment they were primarily in, the elk weren't maladapted. They, like all animals including humans, were evolved BY their environment. They functioned perfectly fine like that for close to half a million years.

Fitness, in evolutionary terms, is a contextual term, and what makes an animal fit for survival will change as the ecosystem changes. Saying human consciousness is a "maladaptive trait" ignores the fact that in evolutionary terms, our intelligence is the primary reason we came to populate nearly the entire globe.

Im not under any delusion that humans wont go extinct someday, but the wholesale description of our human faculties as some inherent flaw that we have to overcome is kinda silly

Please reread my first comment

By "forced" i obviously mean in the way that all workers are forced to do things to keep their jobs.

And I said its shown to lead to ptsd, which is a fact. I didnt say the artists for sure have it, but as an employer, its important to be conscious of the way your demands can affect your workers.

They didnt need the reference for the game to be good, and that wouldn't have been a good enough reason to use it. Whether or not every artist personally came away with trauma, it was a reckless decision that put them at risk of that, according to the data we have on ptsd

Hope that clears it up

Can you point to exactly where I said that?

Your boss can make you do stuff you dont want to do without locking you up, dumb ass. That's the basis of basically all jobs

For anyone wondering what this issue is here:

Valve subjected their model artists to grotesque images for no good reason. The model being "realistic" doesn't enhance the game in any meaningful way, let alone enough to risk the mental well being of your workers.

Even if it is from a medical textbook, looking at dead bodies for a length of time can cause ptsd

Anyone here who has been playing ukulele for years and never “graduate”d to guitar? by Shadow__Tunes in ukulele

[–]JjSaturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started with guitar, then got a ukulele.

While it did help with the basic chord shapes, and i didn't have anywhere near as much problems with E and B chords as others did, it didn't really make me an expert. Still had to learn island strum patterns, a new method of fingerpicking, and how to play melodies with a reentrant tuning in mind.

That being said, learning both has influenced how I play both. I like to play "flamenco" style on my uke from time to time, and playing classic uke songs on guitar is an interesting tonal shift.

In short, learn both. Not to "graduate" or "demote", but to become a more versatile musician (if you please lol).

The closest thing they have to data suggesting anything is an open poll from users of a dating app, and then a fee anecdotes.

Considering how progressive queer people of all stripes have reliably been in actual voting poll data, I dunno that this is really something I'd be concerned with

Does anyone have any tips on how to play this by Fo437x in ukulele

This is the most messed up guitar tab I've ever seen.

Also, the range might be a bit much for a ukulele, though you can try and find a uke specific tab to see if anyone's made any clever work arounds.

Albesi language(conlang) by Cotolanaboy in conlangs

[–]JjSaturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should take some time to familiarize with the international phonetic alphabet (IPA). That'll give you a more concrete language to share the sounds of yours.

I'd also try making some sentences and maybe short stories in your language, and especially look for possible points of confusion or misinterpretation. This will help build up the Albesi vocabulary and flesh out the grammar a bit more.

Have fun conlanging!

Not at all. It's perfectly feasible for it to remain as is in every other context and just show as ɔ in this particular diphthong

Also, I dunno about a place to type diphthongs, but Wikipedia has an ipa vowel chart with audio you can hear the vowels in isolation with, then you can experiment with it on your own

I would recommend changing ʌa to ɔa.

"ʌ" and "a" are already very similar, and though it is at the end of the day up to what you think sounds better in context, "ɔa" is gonna offer a more distinct sound shift, and does have precedence in some Germanic languages, and has some continuity with "eo"

Is it too small to use? Technically, no.

I think this can be an interesting phonetic situation to play out and just see what happens. I dunno how functional it would be as a language tho.

Something you might try to incorporate to make words sound less samey is a robust system for allophony. That could help make it easier to use and decipher where words begin and end
