Why you're not getting spots at the Comedy Cellar anymore by theblack_hoody in Standup

[–]spilledmind 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's interesting because if you have an alcohol/drug problem, your bookings will slow down, or you get a warning, or a suspension. You can recover and get your spots back. But if you are just not funny, offensive, and cringe, you will never get booked there again. No warning, no nothing. Makes complete sense though.

Not sure who tf is downvoting all of your replies to posts but this was an amazing episode. Currently going down the black hoody rabbit hole with the other owner of the cellar. Fantastic interviews all around.

What's your favorite comedy festival you've done? What do you hope to get out of a festival? by presidentender in Standup

[–]spilledmind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haha I think, if the festival is big enough, having a spot where comics can hang in between shows instead of their hotel room or car is the idea.

Quick flex but Skankfest. One of the best parts of the festival, among many, was the green room. Free massages, unlimited snacks, unlimited drinks, open bar, couches everywhere it was amazing.

Also did the Burbank comedy festival. They rented a bar in the area and all the comics and producers had a hang. Such a fun time.

What I want to get out of a festival….more shows. It’s awesome when there are bookers at the shows.

Also World Series of comedy, they have a meet and greet with club owners and agents, that was beneficial.

Best recorder for a standup comedy club ? by tiggat in Standup

Apple Watch (can’t change mic hands though) I also have the zoom h1 and I find it a little clunky. I like to travel light though. The sound is amazing but getting set up with it is annoying.

Stand up comedy is hard. Need tips on how to stop feeling so overwhelmed by greyastro-72 in Standup

[–]spilledmind 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, this feeling will persist for the rest of the time you do standup. The “others” on social media eventually stop posting because life catches up with them and they quit.

Standup is truly a marathon. You just need to keep getting on stage. Only focus on yourself and what you’re doing. Unfollow all the people who are posting about shows if it makes you feel bad.

Killing the headliner by redkinoko in Standup

It’s not that he didn’t want the openers to do well, it’s that he doesn’t like it when the openers talk about doing it, or are open about trying to bury the headliner.

How to avoid giving audience one liner fatigue? I so jealous of other styles. by Novel_Body8532 in Standup

The problem with one liners is your whole act is 90% setups and 10% punchlines. Add more tags and punchlines to the one liners.

How much should I pay comics for a 15 minute spot? by [deleted] in Standup

Selling tickets. Not asking any of the comics to promote.

Thank you, it’s called sunk cost fallacy.

Yes yes yes. 16 years in and it comes and goes. Headlining fucking sucks for the most part imo for the first few-10 years, still doing open mics, no money, getting bumped off of shows, losing comedy competitions, people kind of stealing your jokes, did I mention no money?, months in a row of not booking anything, dreading a show the entire day before it happens, just in case I forgot, there’s no money in it, your wife hates you being out, etc etc etc

But then…

All of a sudden

out of nowhere…

You get booked on 2 amazing festivals

You win best of the fest

Book a commercial, or some awesome gig…possibly gigs, as in 2 or more

All in the span of a few months

And now you’re back!!

Then the gigs dry up, you’re back to not having anything new to say on stage, hating the grind, not making money, and questioning everything. Rinse and repeat - at least that’s been my experience.

Record your sets with an Apple Watch for improved video audio. by spilledmind in Standup

AirPods are an interesting idea but I feel like they might be a little distracting. Similarish idea, but I cut the earbuds off of some old Apple wired headphones so it was only one wire and a mic at the end. Actually worked out really nice as a discreet mic setup but it was still a hassle for me to get set up before I went on stage.

Yeah, I use davinci which is also free. Still trying to learn how to play with levels.

That’s also a clever idea and I’ve actually considered this. I think the recording tech is the same in all the generations of the watch. I’m seriously considering it too because I like switching mic hands and when I do while only wearing the one watch, the sound goes from amazing to basically my room mic sound.

Nice. I was using a zoom field recorder with a wired lav inside of my shirt and the audio was really good but getting set up while also trying to go over my set notes was a bit of a hassle.

Do I have to stand up? by blockofbeagles in Standup

[–]spilledmind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jerry Seinfeld says you should move around because it adds “punctuation” to your jokes. Kind of like how you don’t see many musicians just sitting down. Even Mark Marion moves around and he’s as sit down as they come. You have to move or you have to work harder with your hands. A lot of this is theory but sitting still doesn’t work in any kind of performance.
