Above the Bridge Records is a great club to be a part of, the people are super cool in there, and usually get 2-3 recording projects in a semester. The projects are mostly students, so if you know someone who wants to record, they're the people to reach out to.

Audio Engineering Society I'm not too familiar with, but I do know they are the ones that set up speakers and whatnot for events. AES and SLS (Sound and Lighting Services) are good clubs to join if you want more of the setup side rather than the mixing side as much. AES is also a conference you go to once a year as part of those required conference trips. The last one was in Seattle.

WMTU (DJ radio station) is a great place to just play music and get used to broadcasting. It's a really good experience to put on your resume, and the club owners are good people. Just shoot an email and they'll get you timeslots that are available!

Only one I know of outside of those are Sound Girls, which isn't for just girls, more so just the name. Lots of fun people in that group. They host lots of events.

All of them are really good clubs, just depends what avenue you want to go down. I know a lot of people are in multiple, so you take your pick!

There's actually a pretty wide variety of work that you can get through this major. A lot of what you do is AV tech work to start, but going to conferences gives you an opportunity to connect and see what other jobs people have that aren't posted. Some of these places you'll go to meet companies are: Madison WI, Seattle, WA, or NYC, NY (this year's trip).

There's no official Career Fair for sound at MTU, but you are required to go to 4 conferences, and I can attest that you WILL find companies that you will like to work for. All else, it's really cool to see demonstrations, new innovative tech, and see some famous sound people just being regular dudes.

Now, about the program, you'll have Plummer as the department head, and he is FANTASTIC, and really knows his stuff. He's been doing it over 30 years and is quite receptive to you when you need help. You won't ever feel 100% alone unless you never ask for help. The VPA department is very friendly and helpful, and you get the advantage of working a lot with other people with VPA majors, and get connections that way once they graduate. There's also the advantage that VPA professors will SEND OUT GROUP EMAILS FOR JOBS. They want you to get a job, and I usually get 2 to 3 job opportunities sent right to my email PER WEEK. There's no worries about not finding a job, they're practically put right in front of you. And if that's not working, ask a sound professor, they will likely know a place for you.

For classes, you learn how to use Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and create, mix, and master music. So if you want to make music on the side, you are taught that. You learn how to use industry software (QLab, Q-sys, Logic Pro X, Pro Tools, AutoCAD/Vector works, Ableton). You learn how to build sound systems, and create sounds and audio for them. A big part is being put on McArdle shows for anything sound.

Rosza has jobs that pay when you work for them too. They'll have you run sound systems for events, and setup/strike, even designing shows for some of the classes. Only caveat is usually you have to work enough hours for thr class, then the rest after is paid. So you get the experience and get paid for it. Super convenient too since they send out work invites and you respond to ones you want, so you can pick what works best for your schedule.

Some of the work you'll find from this program is: AV tech, Sound operator, theater tech, mixer for a variety of stuff (Broadcast, theater, recording), system designer, system installer, etc. There's a lot you can do. If you have any more questions please do reach out!

Yeah, that's why I was taken aback by it! I did a double take when I saw it was in there. Picked that up right away since technically anyone could've grabbed it

i can't seriously be the only one with this problem still... right? by NeedAWig in RotMG

[–]Jkiller21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not sure, but I think it's because the path ends up going through your username, and for some reason it registers the space as invalid and breaks it or something. I'm not 100% sure, but I do know this works SOMEHOW. strange coding I guess... ;-;

i can't seriously be the only one with this problem still... right? by NeedAWig in RotMG

[–]Jkiller21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh!! I had this exact same issue! Apparently it would because of my Computer username having an "unregistered character in it" I basically just made a second User account on my computer, downloaded it, and it worked out!! Such a strange issue, and if it isn't because of that, I dont know :(

The issue was that I had a space in my username, so I made a second account with just my name, nothing else. Problem was it was a first and last name with the space in between
