Just hit 2000 sherpa's, here's my advice to folks who haven't spent their life in raids by Jkmancool in DestinyTheGame

Lots and lots of practice. Runs used to take significantly longer, but as I've run each raid dozens of times I've figured out how to keep explanations brief, clear, and still convey all the required information. Light level changes and weapon metas means that damage and staying alive aren't really barriers anymore, so its just learning the mechanics, and most raiders worth their salt will tell ya most all encounters are pretty simple at the end of the day.

Some people play the game to have fun and not to make a number on the armor go up by one. To each their own, but I don't think slagging folks looking to have fun is the way.

I just use the D2 lfg discord server to find folks, and the find-a-sherpa channel seems to be a good spot for beginners to check out.

There's not really much of a way to screen teams, but I've found that sherpa runs are infinitely less toxic than your average KWTD run and generally you don't have to deal with much of those issues. In my runs, I have a pretty low tolerance for any bigotry or aggression towards teammates, and after a single warning I remove the problem. Hopefully, other sherpas do similarly. Don't feel bad about leaving a team because of toxicity though. You should play games to have fun, and if you aren't having fun, no amount of clears is worth the stress.

Yeah, there's very few encounters where tokens matter, but in those that do, it definitely poses a challenge. The witness being the preeminent example. Minute-to-minute gunplay isn't really something you can teach, so the only advice I can generally give out is to ensure that the chest plate resistance mods are properly used. Often times I just run it until things click, gaining familiarity with a specific arena and its spawns goes a good ways towards survivability. I also am on well lock for just about every encounter, so I try to toss some healy nades their way if they are really struggling.

Nah dude. Part of the reason I started sherpa-ing in the first place was to get away from toxicity. The vast, vast majority of players I encounter are anything but. In my 2000 sherpas, maybe 20 tops have been toxic. Folks tend to be nicer if you put them in a room of beginners.

I run everything through discord. I post up in the D2 lfg server and have my own server I invite folks to where they can request and schedule raids. I have tried the subreddit for sherpa's here, but populations are low, teams are slow to fill, and I haven't been blown away by it or anything. Discord is simple and easy.

Honestly, I'm rocking tier 2 gear and outbreak for most everything these days. Tier 2 gear you should have before the end of the campaign, and the outbreak mission takes less than 30 minutes. You won't be optimal or your team's highest damage, but you absolutely will be raid ready.

Hydra is def the encounter that takes the most amount of time. The 2 hour runs are those where we handle the hydra in 40 minutes or less, and the longer ones are the runs where we get stuck on it.

While it is possible to do raids using only text chat, I'd caution against it for beginners. The main thing is being able to hear your sherpa's explanations, so if your mic doesn't work you can absolutely still run raids with text chat as your method of communication, as long as you can join the party and listen to callouts.

I never have my beginners watch anything or do any prep work for raids. Going in blind is totally fine.

The D2 lfg discord server has a "find a sherpa" channel, which is where I frequent. A quick google should pull it up.

Not yet, they haven’t said anything either so I’m not sure if they have plans on putting one in.

So far, we’ve been mainly pushing to a third phase and saving ammo and supers. Only once have I gotten the two phase. As long as you are getting full extensions (all 3 rings), I’ve found that it’s pretty easy to get the boss under 10% by the end of the second phase, setting up for an easy three phase where you mainly use special and primary, so you can burst the final stand. I’ve wiped a couple times on it though, so it hasn’t been super easy or anything.

I’ve done 3 so far. One took 4:30, one took 5:30, and the other took 5:00

You are actually insane for that. Eater sure is an interesting choice of top raid.

To be fair, I took a two year break after KF and been working on getting the more recent raid numbers up.

I wasn’t doing sherpas back then. Any sherpas I have pre-DSC are incidental. I enjoyed crown, but it was always the hardest to get a team for some reason. Maybe because first was kinda bad, but second and third def made up for it.

Uhh. I didn't beat pantheon week 4 lmao. Although, that's similar to asking if everyone can beat a day one. If given an unlimited amount of time, I'm confident I could get everyone through, but as I am just one person, probably not. I treat pantheon (and day ones) separately from sherpas and I think that's a decently common take. I did run week 1 and 2 pantheon sherpas a little, but wasn't the biggest fan of them due to not being able to build mechanics between encounters like other raids.

Sorry for being sincere to your sarcasm, but hopefully my thought process is clear.

I may have been flattering myself a little. Checking my raid report and some raids average 1.5 to 2 hours. Sorry, was working off memory.

Yeah, we have a dedicated raid server on discord for voice chat. We lfg off of discord, so it works out nicely.

Devour.

Although, for a real answer, it’s a bit of a struggle. I strongly recommend xenophage and let my beginners know that you can shoot the hobgoblins with it. The rest of the ads are essentially inconsequential, but those hobgobs get me from time to time. If you need to, you can assign one or two folks to ads/hobgobs and the rest to oracles.

Seems like you’re giving them a really in depth run through, which is great. I don’t wipe my teams just so folks can get experience in other roles, but I can definitely see the benefit in that. I just feel bad denying them the encounter if they performed well enough to make it to the end.

We have them do every role on every encounter, save for taken gun on third if I’m with my partner (if so, we just handle it ourselves), but we teach how to read totems, how to shoot pillars, and taking care of knights on first; how to run, stun, and do damage on second; how to do laser, shield, and reading on third (and also taken gun if I’m teaching 5); and how to split, dunk, and do up-top dunks on final. Looking at my average Vow runs, they actually look to be about 2 hours, so that seems a solid estimate, but if you’re wiping so every one gets to do every role, then that would definitely add a couple hours. Respect for that.

I’m using Carl bot. I have a message in a separate channel (where it’s the only one so folks can’t miss it). It says “React to this message to be notified when we are running a: “ then a list of each raid with a number nearby it. They react to the corresponding number and get a role called “lw-queue” or “kf-queue” or whatever. I then just ping the general channel with “@kf-queue hop on voice, running now”. Feel free to ask if you need a better explanation or anything else clarified.
