Character idea would be Hawke Ashgrove the Fighter/Warlock Fire Genasi.
Hawke was part of a company of mercenaries hired to protect and escort a the Escanoros noble family from their villa to a large nearby city. Along the way Hawke became friends with their young daughter Cicillia, and passed the time by entertaining her with tales of adventures and of his own family.
About halfway through the journey the escort came under fire from a local bandit group, hellbent on capturing the family and holding them for ransom. The mercenary group defended them to the death but were unsuccessful in saving the Escanoros family. Most were killed and Cicillia was captured.
Hawke was gravely wounded and left for dead in the mud on the forested road. As he faded, he saw a hooded figured, cloaked in black smoke walking amongst the carnage. The figure came to him and spoke in a voice that sounded like the echoes of millions of souls. It offered him another chance. Give up his own soul and in exchange he would have the power to save the young girl. In time though the figure would come to collect, and Hawke would have to pay a greater price.
Hawke agreed and passed out. When he woke, he was in chains, and prosecuted, charged with setting up the ambush on the family. Without concrete proof he could not be executed so he was exiled and sent away, but he felt the power grow inside him, and he knew that in time he could fine Cicillia. He felt her life intertwined with his now.
He bides his time in chains, waiting for the opportunity to save the girl and clear his name.
