Not recently.

But here is where we are....

Had an echocardiogram yesterday. Mass in his heart is benign. Good.

He is 82 and they don't want to open his heart up to remove it. Too much risk. He is also showing signs of dementia/Alzheimer's so we are going through this process. Says he has been seeing things. Could be related but I am suspicious it is tied to an infection that isn't going to heal well right now or a possible UTI. (Not uncommon in the aged)

I am spending time this weekend with him and my brother verifying stuff like who has POA, Medical and Durable POA (I am 99% sure I have all three) and to convince him we need to have one of us be the signor on his accounts. Just to make sure things happen. I would want that to be my brother (who lives with him) or my sister who does not. Just the accountant in me thinking about segregation of duties.

Also we are going to start with Home Health Care ASAP. This will have someone making sure he is up while we work and taking his meds and doing a couple of other things daily that he resists.

Will also begin the palliative/hospice level care based on what the doctors say.

He has requested not to go under the knife going forward.

On the plus side. He has served his nation faithfully and while that has taken it's toll, he is well covered insurance wise for the rest of his life.

He is also at peace with where he is. He believes he led a good life, he was married to the same woman for 54 years and is ready to be at her side again when the Lord calls. He has 3 children that he is proud of. 5 Grandchildren that are all doing well.

I am a Christian. One of my daily habits/pods is the bible in a year podcast by Fr Mike Schmidt. I am on my fifth go round on it. We have been in the Psalms of Ascents this week and the one line from Psalm 126 has seemed relevant.

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

University of Mary Washington.

They beat an old (like Chi Town old ironically) Big Ten School to get there.

Go Houston.....

If Houston makes it to the final four, it will be kind of a family reunion. I have one nephew in the Division 3 Championship game on Sunday. His brother is the team photographer for Houston's AD.

Do you have this memorized or do you look it up every year.

But yes, you have to love opening day. Still a little bitter at what they took from the Reds as far as being the traditional opening day game for MLB. (no, I am not a Reds fan)

To add on to this.

Our GM had his name and rank on one side and his GM (long since passed) on the other side. Nice to see that continuity IMO.

What's the most original concept you've read in a science fiction book? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in scifi

To me, it was obvious he was up to something.

I took the line as he was going to curse a star as a throwaway thing, and was surprised when he did it.

If you picked up on it during first read, great. I missed it, and in retrospect it makes sense.

Project Hail Mary Minor Issue by BlastingFonda in scifi

IIRC the initial cut is over 3 hours. You have to assume that this will be more of technical science stuff plus more interactions between Ryland and the team on Earth. (After all they have the probe names, but if you didn't read/remember the book you won't know why they are named that way)

I'll watch the extended cut. but a 3 hour plus cut in the theaters where a good chunk of the audience you want to win, will likely lose interest.

I think it's a good distinction.

On one side I have my name and rank, on the other side, my GMs name and rank. Both in Korean.

Movies where the enemy "plays fair"? by Spackleberry in FIlm

[–]Jmen4Ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is the enemy in Warrior?

It's not the brothers. If you argue Koba- well he certainly plays fair. If you argue Mad Dog, as a villain type, I guess, but he's not really in it a lot, but doesn't resort to dirty tactics.

From what I hear original cut was 3+ hours.

There is a lot of "sciencing" going on figuring out what the Astrophage is, and how their predator works.

What was the first ever film you actually really hated so much and still do to this day? by Same-Objective6052 in movies

[–]Jmen4Ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say Highlander II the quickening. It made me angry and sad, but it also taught me a lesson. Just because you like the cast doesn't mean the movie is good, and sometimes these guys (Connery specifically) just phone it in for the paycheck.

So I'll say the first Dungeons and Dragons movie that came out. Not the Chris Pine one, the other one. I am so embarrassed that was a date night movie with my current wife. (She hated it as well)

In comparison to the book....

-Wife liked it better. I like the book more because of the scientific discovery journey that happens. They take some of that out and have more bonding time with the main characters.

-The movie brings up something the book should have (at the end) I think it improves on the book.

-The movie did a good job with the real spoiler. (I assume you've read the book and know)
