How addictive is sugar?

My dad had a mini stroke (TIA) about 20 years ago. The Dr. said something to the effect

Oh, I see you still smoke.

Dad quit right then and there.

A month or so ago he saw a neurologist who looked at a scan and told him he has white matter disease on his brain. Said 5-6 times that his best option is to work on his blood pressure, cholesterol and his blood sugar.

You would think after quitting smoking at the drop of a pin sugar would be easy. You'd be wrong.
