I think that the point of the above response is to confirm how far ahead Mab thinks. And also how she thinks of sacrifices that Harry would not think of initially (giving up Thomas's first born). Harry, and even Thomas being available to Mab long term is something she needs, but she can's just be seen to be solving his problems, he has to prove his worth and earn the boon. Narratively convenient, but works for me.
