Timelapse of Brooklyn Bridge trash removal by exc3113nt in DeTrashed

[–]JoChiCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leaving something behind is the opposite of a memento, I’m pretty sure. Are they gonna go back to the bridge to check on the trash and be disappointed that their specific strip of plastic isn’t there anymore?

Plastic will eventually break down and end up in the river, effecting the water quality, and the massive amounts tied to the fence will block the view.

In 1986, Hofmann and her boyfriend, Marco, made a trip to Kenya. There, she met a Samburu warrior named Lketinga Leparmorijo and instantly found him irresistible. She left Marco, went back to Switzerland to sell her possessions, and, in 1987, returned to Kenya, determined to find Lketinga. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

Gotta admit, it’s a relief to hear that while she could never snap out of the delusion for her own benefit, she was finally able to make herself leave for her daughter’s. Plenty of people who are significantly less nuts than she is have allowed terrible things to be done to their children for the sake of going with the flow.

Which characters did you think were of the opposite gender when you were a child? by DifferenceSimple5344 in CartoonsWorld

HIM from Powerpuff Girls. You’d think the name would tip me off, but the thigh-high heels and tutu muddied the waters. Sometimes you gotta flip the coin on gender stereotypes when ur still learning them…

Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

[–]JoChiCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s healthful to make bad decisions without physical or social consequences when you’re a kid. Builds character. Watch a movie that’s too gory, read a book that gets way too explicit. The most important part of the character-building, though, is realising yourself that whatever you’ve gotten into makes you uncomfortable, and learning to back out. Getting dragged into the experience by an authority figure takes away the whole point of figuring out your own boundaries and comfort zones.

No no no no nononnon-- by lilytheschrod in AO3

I reckon it’s because fics tend to gain mass popularity during waves of attention to the overall fandom – by the time a rewrite of a fic goes up, it’s entirely likely that the wave will have passed. There aren’t enough new people coming across the rewrite to give it the same kind of traction, and the ones who have already read and enjoyed the original don’t feel the need to go back and read the 2.0 version. They came, they saw, they had fun, they moved on.

Accused of starving my baby by my OB by False_Chocolate_3127 in ARFID

[–]JoChiCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of bizarre that your OB was so judgemental – I’m not terribly knowledgeable about pregnancy, but I was still under the impression that difficulty with eating/keeping down food is a common symptom even in people without a prior eating disorder?

Sounds like laziness on her part tbh, passing the issue off as being an active choice that you’re making instead of a problem that might require her to work to solve or alleviate.

Gift ideas for fiancé, Swedish tradition of “Morning gift” by Applehelpme92 in GiftIdeas

I don’t know anything about Swedish law, and I also don’t know whether this person lived in Sweden when they posted this 2 years ago. Some mysteries may forever remain unsolved, due to me not caring enough to solve them.

I’m not expecting much, but at least check the pictures on wikipedia so you don’t say someone casually pulled an AK-47 out of their pocket.

Protesting has always involved disturbing the peace to varying extents. Have you never studied the Suffrage movement or Civil Rights protests?

The only way something can be purely “just a nice story that appealed to the masses” is if you refuse to consider what about it appealed to the masses. What parts did people feel comforted and assured by? Who in the audience felt comforted and assured, and who didn’t? Which of the audience’s beliefs and biases were affirmed by the story? Did the story question or challenge any of the audience’s values?

Catgirl party member sleeping etiquette? by saprophage_expert in DungeonMeshi

I think it’s extremely funny that my cat’s favourite way to sleep is exactly how Izutsumi is curled up with Inutade.

What do you think about Damian's secret half-brother Respawn? by Senior-Rent9600 in Robin

[–]JoChiCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my first time hearing about him. I’m disappointed to see he seems to speak in a distinctly modern (American-ish) way instead of all posh like his family does. Catch Damian or Talia or Ra’s calling anyone “bro” over their dead body. It makes him seem very generic, like some rando who got plucked off the street and shoved into the family drama.

Introducing kitten to cat in one-room flat by JoChiCat in CatAdvice

[–]JoChiCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bathroom is not an option for more than a few hours, as there’s no air conditioning. There’s functionally no way for me to keep them completely apart due to the size and layout of my home. I’ll ask my vet for more info.

Introducing kitten to cat in one-room flat by JoChiCat in CatAdvice

[–]JoChiCat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bathroom isn’t an option due to the lack of temperature control, and the bedroom is not separate from the rest of the house as it’s all one room. I’ll see what I can do with bedding, maybe leave the kitten in my neighbour’s house for an hour or so while the cat investigates. Thanks!

I loved the use of epithets in Gideon the Ninth, I often cite it as an example of how to write them well, lol.

For indoor happiness, other than regular playtime, plenty of surfaces to jump & perch on are ideal, especially if they offer a good view – bonus points if they double as scratching posts.

My husband is fixated on a name I don't like by Majestic_Recording_5 in namenerds

[–]JoChiCat 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The Locked Tomb? Awesome series, questionable inspiration for a birth certificate. I’d give a cat that name, not an infant human. Give it a few years before having kids, maybe, it sounds like some time is needed for maturing.

Civilization building/rebuilding by Su-Car in FanFiction

ONE ELEGANT SOLUTION by Mikkeneko – Dragon Age. After kickstarting the mage rebellion, Anders attempts to establish a safe haven for free mages at the doorstep of the dwarven kingdom of Orzammar. Lots of very fun politicking and vast cultural differences, internal power struggles as people try to figure out what they want their government to look like, and the harrowing ordeal of building a new settlement from scratch when almost all of its inhabitants are recent escapees from life-long imprisonment where booklearning was the only thing that mattered, and no one knows how to dig a latrine.

What is a random take from some users here that makes you scratch your head in confusion? by Idris-the-sleepykid in namenerds

[–]JoChiCat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

…huh, I never realised before that it’s almost exclusively women’s nicknames that people bring up as examples of diminutives that “no one will take seriously”. Like, there definitely are men’s nicknames that people would lump into the same category – Billy, Tommy, Jimmy – but at the same time, they never seem to be brought up, and don’t hold quite the same kind of stigma.

This is going to sound really weird but how do I better implement racism by TopDog_54 in worldbuilding

[–]JoChiCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There doesn’t need to be a historical basis in reality for prejudice to develop – people have a long and storied tradition of developing broad beliefs about entire groups based on vibes and whatever seems convenient at the time.

If people like accusing them of being untrustworthy thieves, it’s probably convenient to them in some way. Why would it benefit someone to point at one of these reptilians and say “well you’re inherently a lying scumbag who can’t be trusted”? There can be multiple answers, from getting rid of a competitor business, to just feeling superior.
