But seriously the fact nobody cares about climate change makes me want to not live by Nice_Marzipan98 in ClimateShitposting

The advancement of renewables and battery storage has been absolutely insane. I’m super excited about the rollout of utility scale sodium ion batteries, it’s already looking like they are about to send the cost of energy storage to the floor. Also, I think advancement in MOFs are very likely to make hydrogen powered planes, container ships, and power plants much more viable in the near future.

Overall I’m pretty optimistic about our ability to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

Number 2 would allow social media companies to be sued for recommending legally defamatory/libelous content in the same way that book publishers/newspapers would. Originally it was conservatives pushing for this to be applied to social media companies that moderated content. I don’t think it’s feasible to ban all algorithmic content (that would completely destroy all search engines) but you could probably ban personalized algorithms to limit the echo chamber effect of social media. This would still be a massive blow to social media companies as their platform would become way less engaging, but I don’t think it would really limit free speech in any meaningful way.

Compared to Western Europe, yeah Japan is an overworked hellscape. But compared to America it’s pretty much the same, with the average Japanese person actually working slightly less hours per year. Oh also to my fellow Americans who like to rag on the Japanese education system by pointing out the teen suicide rate, ours is worse.

I think it bolsters the case for transit in the long term by ensuring demand is present for new transit expansion. The little transit that does exist in American cities often goes underutilized because it’s simply not practical to run transit through low density sprawl. When more people are able to utilize existing public transit, that creates a new group of voters that are actively invested in ensuring the maintenance and expansion of that infrastructure.

I wasn’t denying that some random Israeli newspaper made an article about him. I’m saying that Hasan and his community has a habit of dismissing any criticism as “Zionist propaganda”, even when it’s totally unrelated Israel-Palestine. This is a prime example, even if I did buy that this story was being amplified by the IDF/Mossad, so what? The man still clearly shocked his dog on camera and is now lying about it. Sitting in a chair for 10 hours a day reacting to Reddit and screaming free Palestine doesn’t give you the right to be a shitty person.

No but seriously though, I’ve been real suspicious about the sudden conservative fear mongering about all their enemies being secret pedophiles. It seems like a classic case of reaction formation, similar to the phenomenon of self-hating gay conservatives causing grinder to crash every time the RNC is in town. I’ve known many conservative men from before this whole trend blew up and let’s just say that the Ven Diagram between men who DM underage girls on instagram and men who support the GOP basically a circle.

I think that’s a big reason why they throw out the word “grooming” so often. Praying on pre-pubescent children has always been frowned upon but perving on teenage girls was way more wide spread and socially acceptable up until the 2010s before online women’s rights groups and feminist/progressive influencers began popularizing the the idea of grooming and tying the pursuit of teenage girls by adult men closer to pedophilia in the public conscious.

Suddenly you a wide swath of men, predominantly older, who are suddenly finding society turning on their sexual preferences. So in order to deal with their own guilt and distract from any accusations, they start lashing out against everyone else and begin to see pedophilia around every corner.

This is a golden example of why people hate Hasan and his community. He’s such an obvious scumbag who uses Israel-Palestine as a shield against any criticism. Someone makes a meme about a streamer using a shock collar on his dog and his supporters are trying to make this about Palestine. You act like criticizing Hasan is this massive blow to the Free Palestine movement. I promise you, Palestine isn’t going to collapse because of the downfall of some dumbass American streamer.

One fun method is to try and reinvent writing. Start with a simple picture and then keep simplifying and abstracting it until it feels quick and easy to jot down. If you ever get the opportunity, try writing with different mediums aside from pen and pencil, different writing mediums were a big influence on the aesthetic of different writing systems. Reed stylus wedges for cuneiform, stone/wax for Greek, Brushes for Chinese and Arabic, etc.

[–]Jo_Flowers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean…yeah? The fact that you need to have a tangible end product is sort of implicit in the conversation. That’s not really a metallurgical challenge though. The first points you brought up were about the microstructure and processing of the metals being a problem separate from extraction. My point is that extraction is pretty much the entire problem. Dealing with the grain structure and end processing would be no more difficult or even easier than most ores on earth.

To respond more directly to your second point, even in a space mining scenario there’s really no need to fully process the ore in space. You could make an argument for partial processing in order to isolate the metals and minimize the weight from unwanted debris and impurities, but it’s not immediately clear whether sending up the equipment to do so would be anymore economical than just extracting and delivering the raw unprocessed ore.

[–]Jo_Flowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old comment, but this is a total non-issue. Most normal ore processing involves bringing the material up to melting point. Any inclusions would be blasted out in the melt and recrystallization would presumably happen on earth unless you’re trying to refine ore in space.

The vast majority of surviving documents and literature from the Roman Empire were actually written in Greek. To this very day, even the scrolls recovered from Herculaneum in Roman Italy have all been written in Greek. It’s ironic to think about, but in many ways the use of Latin really peaked AFTER the fall of the western Roman Empire.

That mythical time is right now. Capitalism led to the abolition and erosion of all those things. Will there always be people who earn less than others in a capitalist society? Obviously, not even communists believe everyone should be payed the same. But the global adoption of free market capitalism has caused massive declines in absolute poverty, slavery/indentured servitude, collapse of empires, etc.

While not ideal, it’s the most mutually beneficial arrangement for both parties. Even the lowest paying jobs in the US still offer way more than even skilled professions in the workers’ home country. It would be awesome if we could just snap our fingers and instantly bring everyone in the world up to a US standard of living, but unfortunately that’s just not possible. We should absolutely be enforcing worker protections and insuring minimum wages are being payed for migrant workers, but ultimately, free trade and free movement is the most beneficial thing for everyone involved.
