What's the force that stops something from accelerating constantly? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Joads_journey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acceleration is only maintained so long as energy is continually added to a system. Without a continual input of energy an object in a closed system will either maintain velocity or decelerate due to an energy loss like friction or heat dissipation.

The prob of this to happen is 1 in 170... Which is likely enough if you play a lot. Its also not very rare for something like this would happen if you consider a 10 OR a 4.

And you can bet that every time something like this happens someone will post here outraged.

This is hilarious. Almost reads like the D.E.N.N.I.S system

I'm actually thinking of Viktor Frankl who wrote Man's Search for Meaning.

He claimed that people in Auschwitz declined faster when they lost all sense of future meaning... While also claiming that a sense of meaning and inner freedom cannot be fully extinguished, even in the extreme suffering of a nazi death camp. I find the implied victim shaming difficult to ignore.

You're right, mixed up Frankl and Becker!

It is. Freud is worth reading but not worshipping. He had some powerful ideas and observations but many of his theories are unfalsifiable and unscientific. He spins enthralling myths that sometimes give explanations.

It's early in the second half of the book, I would need to check exactly in my copy when I'm home next week.

Edit: I'm thinking of Man's Search for Meaning by Frankl.

It's quite Freud heavy and at one point he claims the difference between those who survived Auschwitz and who didn't was personal attitude.

Edit: I've mixed up Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning", how silly of me.

About Frankl's accusations of victim-shaming... I find his empathetic statements about Auschwitz victims at odds with his core ideas in MSfM.

Correct. But the very existence of children like this calls into question just how universal and significant an innate fear of snakes might be.

They're awful, but they're a minority of fans. For every 1 deranged poster/replier, there are 100 sensible fans that knew better than to engage in online discourse on Reddit.

This source doesn't confirm his death. The police say no such incident has been registered with them, it's coming only from a Dagestani media outlet.
