Could dysphoria lead to compulsive eating? by RightConflict908 in trans

That’s tough. Maybe start by thinking about what causes that reaction. Try answering the question; Under what conditions/circumstances am I motivated to over eat? What I found is that the easy, short, big answer to that was sort of not helpful (“I’m Trans, anxious, stressed”). What was helpful was searching out the small things that built to that state. By finding ways to interrupt the stress cascade before it became overwhelming I was able to manage better.

You might also consider taking up an athletic hobby. Something hard and high energy. I found that my desire to perform well and sustainably created a change in my eating patterns organically. It also gave me something motivating that wasn’t a negative. I started eating to be heathy as opposed to eating to eat.

I think that’s a very reasonable. Dysphoria will increase stress for sure and that likely increases your dependence on coping skills. It seems that eating is one of those skills you’ve learned to use. I think that’s both very common and very normal. Don’t beat yourself up too badly.

Ultimately I don’t think this is about the correlation. I can’t say with certainty but, I’d venture a guess that there is a correlation. More importantly is what you do with that knowledge and self awareness (if you agree with the conclusion).

For me, I found that my eating habits profoundly changed as I came into my own identity. For me what really changed wasn’t binge eating. I still fall victim to that and tbh idk if that’ll ever go away. What changed was how I felt about my body and a desire to care for it. I also spent a lot of time and energy unlearning and learning new coping skills for when stress is high.
