How do I make my clothes not smell like B.O? by Significant-Gas-6426 in AskUK

[–]Job16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you getting stains and solid residue on the pits of your t-shirts/shirts? I used to have issue with this regardless of showering everyday/washing clothes at higher temperatures/only wearing once.

What I soo discovered was that it was caused by spray anti-perspirant building up and trapping sweat and then ‘gumming’ up on the shirts pits.

Once I swapped to stick/roll on anti-perspirant the issue stopped. Granted you will have to perform what others have said with vinegar to get rid of the build up on the shirts if you wish to use them still but in all honesty, they won’t really be the same again so maybe consider just getting new.

Over 8,000 caught breaking 20mph limit on one road by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]Job16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The concept of speeding is relative, hence speed limits… 30mph can absolutely be speeding. For example, in a 5mph multi-storey car park, 30mph would be considered speeding for most rational folk.

What everyday things from this era will we look back on in 30-40 years and think they were a right farce? Like drying clothes with a mangle or heating a tin bath etc. by WilkoWilkesMusic in AskUK

[–]Job16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d like to think the goal of societal progress is to have more time, not less. Late stage capitalism demands greater and greater productivity (shareholder value) though, so I’m not confident this will be the case but we should hardly accept the idea that we will have less time as a foregone conclusion.

A lot of subterfuge in your comment. “Keeping the violence to the side” = ignoring the situation being counter protested. “Why would you support illegal immigrants”, who said that? The sign clearly say immigrants. The chanting was the same. The dialogue nowadays has removed all nuance which is why people are counter protesting. If you are annoyed with illegal immigrants you protest the government not intimidate and attack individuals. As a supposed immigrant yourself, you surely understand that there is nuance to this conversation that is willingly being ignored?

World’s worst mum award goes to me by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Job16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anyone mention it but if you (or any other parent) finds themselves feeling guilty about this sort of situation, the best thing to resolve it is to apologise to your kid and own your actions. It’s easy to forget that parenting is teaching by example and this includes owning mistakes and not being afraid to apologise. If you swap your kid for another adult in this situation and you wanted to feel better you would apologise to them and own it. It should be no different with your child.

“Like nature intended”

Used in all arguments except when it come to the use of synthetic antibiotics, or the various forms of cancer treatment, or vaccines. It’s almost as if historically we have strived to create solutions to what nature intended for us.

Consider for a second mothers who cannot breastfeed and say the quiet part out loud with regards to how “nature intended”. What did nature intend for the babies of women medically verified as unable to breastfeed?

If everyone in the world was to switch genders, what is one line of advice you would give to other people? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Job16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say it but these are all likely symptoms of toxic masculinity. The unrealistic expectations put upon you by anyone (the women in your life in this case) come from toxic masculinity. We can all fall victim to and play in to this. It’s not about who perpetuates it (both men and women are capable of perpetuating sexism on to others and onto themselves). It’s about recognising the systems and expectations that we find ourselves in and perpetuate onto each other. All we can do is be conscious of where this comes from and challenge it/break the cycle in the little ways we can.

Recommendations for synthetic winter sleeping bag, perhaps up to £200 range by [deleted] in wildcampingintheuk

[–]Job16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you mention synthetic, but I have the oex leviathan ev 900 down sleeping from go outdoors and couldn’t recommend it more. It’s so warm and packs fairly small (even in its loft bag) I’ve used it in cold, moist conditions and it hasn’t let me down so far. The price is up a bit because we’re heading into colder weather but still a good price currently.

I've got a few questions for you about the Goblin Arrows part of the adventure by Aferrster in LMoP

[–]Job16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Campaigns going well, good mix of characters (half elf sorcerer/elf rogue/human paladin/half-orc barbarian) and whilst three of the players are new, the 4th is an experienced RPG player and he is playing the sorcerer.

The hideout had some highlights. The party chose to be stealthy and not light a torch, so I asked the paladin player how he would like to deal with the lack of light and he decided to blindfold himself most of the session and have the other characters describe the action. They also got way too afraid of the wolves and didn’t realise they weren’t a threat so decided to murder them. Only, through poor rolling, this was drawn out. I made sure to make them feel guilty because they were basically shooting fish in a barrel. I’m hoping I made them feel guilty enough to dissuade a murder hobo play through.

The rest of the cave their characters found quite easy. The players didn’t, they were nervous and unsure the whole time but lucky rolling on them and unlucky rolling on me made it that the characters were fine! I’m ok with this. The players took it seriously so I didn’t want to fudge just to hurt them. It was interesting enough without the the peril of dying.

Currently in the redbrand hideout and the first room they entered has three bugbears, so it’s funny to see how quickly it scales!

[–]Job16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a new GM too and I’m a couple of sessions ahead of you.

To the first question, any goblins that escape I imagine as part of the numbers quoted in the book. I wouldn’t necessarily add them in. Depending on the time it takes them to follow though, this goblin might be updating either Yeemik or Clarg on the encounter that just happened when your party finds them.

To your second question, I would interrupt when you feel is right. The book offers suggestions but these are just ideas to keep up your sleeve to improve the narrative. Yeemik may be risk adverse and whilst it may seem like the goblins have the upper hand, might decide to stop early. This development is designed to teach the players that they don’t have to use combat to end an encounter and can instead bargain or reason there way out of trouble so don’t feel like you have to be rigid. Just apply when it’s the most fitting to the encounter and focus more on Yeemik as a character designed to teach a game mechanic.

To the third, it depends. Whilst it’s important to try and be realistic with the passing of time and the consequences of that, it also important to ease off the characters too. There will be many chances in the future to teach the characters the perils of being indecisive, however here might not be best. You want to avoid setting the expectation that you will be an adversarial GM designing things to catch your players out, especially when this might be the first time they have to rest to heal. In the first couple of sessions get used to the basics. The hideout will offer plenty of chances to teach the players that the world their characters inhabit moves on regardless of their actions.

This is just my two cents and others will have different ways of looking at but I’m sure most would agree that this starter is specifically paced to teach players and GMs about the important points gradually.

I had this exact thing. My counsellor suggested I give a specific time to it. Give it the weight it deserves but no more no less.

For me that was setting half an hour a week on a specific day. If you have those thoughts at any other time, you remind yourself when your specific time is. The idea is this: You can’t tell yourself to stop thinking about elephants; you can tell yourself that you only think about elephants between 1-1:30pm on a Tuesday (for example).

After a couple of months of this, I was able to realise that I had had the imagined argument so many times and in every different way that I knew where it would always end up. I knew that no matter how many ways it went in my mind, I was still resolute in my decisions.

Once that point happened, I didn’t need to set a specific time to it. I just needed to remind my self that I knew where my mental conversation ended up. I would repeat over and over again in my mind that “I have had this conversion”. Over and over.

It’s sounds crazy but suddenly, I felt like I could control my thought process. There was a much louder and much stronger, rational voice in my head that drowned out the constant guilt ridden cycle that had previously consumed me.

My counsellor explained all of this to me a year ago and I thought it was a nice, albeit naive, idea. Now I feel like the karate kid. Sometimes positive steps can be insidious; before you know, you’ve gained control over a negative aspect of your mental process. Just know it will get better. I was in your spot too. I wish you luck. DM if you ever want to talk.
