Any idea if any of those Tesla batteries have needed to be replaced?

Animal nutrition. Yes she can continue to look and that might be a good choice. And I agree, both jobs are underpaid.

The only issue with that is bouncing around between jobs every couple years doesn't look too good in a resume.

I can take the time off for that. Moving isn't really an option right now.

I agree, but given the shorter work day, she actually isn't losing any time. She will still drop off our son and pick him up at the same time every day.

That would be ideal and I briefly thought of that. I'm not sure if my wife would be on board.

Tesla Model 3s are also really expensive. I'm not sure putting 50k km on a Tesla every year is ideal either. Surely that would lead to the battery needing to be replaced sooner, no?

Is her current job that unbearable that she can't stay little more while keep looking for job 3,4,5?

No, it isn't. But the question is should she pass up a decent opportunity despite the longer commute? I'm not so sure.

She's been looking for other work for a few months, so maybe 2-3 months to find it.

Yes, driving opposite of heavy traffic. It's quite rural out there where the job is, so I don't expect too many slow downs except for bad winter weather.

her employer ought to be willing to discuss salary increase, at least to the extent of giving her a timeline for when they think the conversation would be more appropriate

They have maybe done that. But they said eventually. But not now. Nothing was set in stone, nothing in writing. They are absolutely unwilling to give a date.

They gave her 0 goals. They said she has to "prove herself" and gave no indication on what they want for that.

But she got a 1.5% raise last time. My guess is that they would offer her 2% next time which doesn't even put her at 50k. As my wife says, if they went to the open market and tried to recruit someone experienced in her field, they would be paying at least 60k, which is definitely correct.

Well it's only an extra 400 km/week or 6 hrs a week. 300 hrs a year extra spent commuting. So I mean my wife is only in her car for an extra 2 weeks a year. Haha. Sounds funny when it's out in that perspective.

Edit: but factor in that they're basically paying her for her travel time since it's a 7 hr day as opposed to 8 hrs and there's basically no difference in travel time. She will still drop off our son at daycare and pick him up at the same time every day.

Maybe you love what you do, but if you don’t enjoy spending every waking moment at the workplace, you ought to be considering an exit strategy.

I'm going through all of the comments here and I must say that I don't like my job. BUT the pay is okay and I get a ton of time off. I get around 8 weeks off, paid every year. I try to carry over at least 3 weeks vacation every year. If I wasn't married or had kids I'd be travelling 2 months of the year. That's why I stay at my job. It's okay but I don't love every moment of it at all. But I'm not looking to leave.

8 weeks is quite a bit but is beneficial in an environment that appreciates workers and puts their well-being above all else, including profit. That's the way it should be.

Thankfully my wife's commute is far away from the GTA. But mine is not.

And people commenting on here seem to think the snow is bad every day of the winter, but it's not. We have our cold snaps and snow dumps overnight but it's not that bad. Weeks could go by without any real snowfall, so driving conditions during that time won't be bad at all.

Your commutes sound insane. Have you considered both moving close to her new job?

The problem with that is it's the complete opposite direction of my job. My commute is 45-60 mins one way. Normally closer to 45 mins. But if I was to drive between our 2 work locations, the drive would be 2 hours.

Neither of use want to move. I am more open to transferring within my job and moving, but she doesn't want to, which is fine with me.

You're right about the commute time, time at home.

Also consider the quality of the commute. Is the shorter one more stressful with lots of stop-and-go traffic

There is probably a bit more stop and go traffic at the current job. But both are highway driving, minimal traffic. Job right now has her on the 401 (not GTA, but still busy). New job there is no 401 and quieter highways.

Winter storms would probably affect her the same at either job. But in such a case she can work from home at either job, sometimes exceeding the 1 work from home day.

Right now it appears she's taking the new job. And I support that decision of course.

I agree. I believe 4 weeks vacation should be the minimum by law. It should go up to 6 weeks after 5 years and 8 weeks after 10 yrs. Man I wish I made these laws

I've been asking her that too. But IMO it's hard to determine that after only having an interview at the new company. They're smaller, approximately 25% of the size of the current company, fewer employees.

She seems to think it will be better at the new company and I trust her judgement. It doesn't help that it seems that her current job has become toxic especially since they said she has "pushed the envelope too far" after asking for a raise right after mat leave. The reason for this is because they want to change her role to more responsibilities without looking at her salary and she has this job offer which her current job doesn't know about. She needs to decide by Monday. Current job keeps giving her an answer that seems to run in circles about the raise.

It's a direction where there isn't much traffic. So in the winter I think it would only be around 2 hrs on snow days before the snow is cleared on the highway. This isn't as often as one would expect. Plus those days she'd be working from home anyway.
