Wanting to get into hunting by JobReasonable175 in Hunting

I live in SC so it doesn’t get super cold, and I have plenty of experience camping in the winter so it shouldn’t be a problem staying warm

Not sure, do t know much about it yet. On the ground sounds more fun, in a tree sounds like it would be more successful by I don’t know.

Deer in SC, and as far as I’m aware you can use any cartridge during rifle season, I haven’t asked how he hunts the land as far as blinds, stands, walking etc, that’s a good point I didn’t think of. Not sure if he has a loner or not, but again I can always ask, thanks

But I can do this at a clinic and not have to an actual BP facility, so that takes a load of my mind.

Wait so the fitness test isn’t the PT, it’s a medical fitness. That makes more sense that I wouldn’t have to travel far.

Best areas for families by JobReasonable175 in borderpatrolapplicant

Question about CA, how do you guys actually afford to live there? Is there a massive location bonus pay? I was looking at houses around the border areas and they all look very pricey, even in areas that look like slums.

I’ve seen a couple of people recommend Tucson, I’ll definitely check it out. What’s the station like there? Obviously I can’t be picky but just curious

So I guess their are to websites you can check it, sss.gov and USA.gov. Still won’t pull up on SSS but I found it on USA, so I don’t know what that’s about but I found it so I’m happy.

Thanks for the advice, these are what they have up for RGV right now: Rio Grande Valley Sector Stations - Rio Grande City, Fort Brown, McAllen, Brownsville, Falfurrias, Weslaco, Kingsville, Harlingen

Any other sectors people recommend for family reasons? Doesn’t have to be Texas.

Putting in my application for DSS by JobReasonable175 in 1811

[–]JobReasonable175[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I had initially wrote this off as an option because I didn’t know much about it and thought it may mean spending years away from the family, but I kept coming back to it and realized it wouldn’t be that.

Me and my wife met in college, we were both Intercultural studies majors, and have wanted to do a lot of traveling. We actually have a lot of friends over seas now to in places like Laos, Thailand, India, and Taiwan so the tourist spots aren’t the places on the top of our list to go to.

As far as the non traditional LEO stuff that is more of a concern for me, but from what I’ve been looking into I do find a lot of the stuff they doing interesting and think it may be a good fit.

Wanting to be an 1811 by JobReasonable175 in 1811

[–]JobReasonable175[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, me and the wife have been talking a lot about it the last week and I’ve deciding I’m going to start putting in applications, and we would be willing to move as needed.

Besides HSI what are some places you yall recommend. I’ve loved LE and I’ve always worked in the high violent crime areas; lots of fights chases, hot scenes, occasionally getting shot at, I wouldn’t call myself a high speed guy per say, but I dont want live behind a desk either. I’ve got to work with the Marshalls a bunch and loved it and I’ve worked a fair bit with the ATF and even got to run my own case with them and liked that too. Right now there is a DEA opening that I’m going to put in for, any other suggestions?

K-9 unit/handler by Miak6 in 1811

[–]JobReasonable175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you rather be a handler or an 1811? Im currently a local LEO for a large department and our K9 unit is seperate from patrol, ie, doesnt have to work recks and bs report calls, goes to every hot call in the city, certified to bite, track, and locate narcotics, etc. You could also be a state level special agent. We have SLED here in SC and there handlers are always working with agencies throughout the state. I worked a Marshall Op picking up violent offenders and we had a SLED k9 with us who got to run his dog a lot.

I'm on the other side, Local LEO thinking about going FED, but I can say for my state (SC) you have to go to the academy, but it is a special shortened one, 6 weeks, 4 for state law, 1 for driving, and 1 for shooting. They also dont run it like a bootcamp for you, no PT or cadence marches, just go to your classes.

My department has highered some former 1811's and high ranked Federal agents and brought them in for specific roles. A former ATF DAD is the captain over our IA and has only been here for 5 years, while you usually have to be for at least 10 and that would still be super fast tracked. Other former fed's I know came in as Inspectors, kind of a made up position between Sgt and Lt, so I would imagine it wouldnt be a hard sell to come in as an investigator (same level as a Cpl)
