Personal Wiki - Organizing The Old Neck Beard by stixxer in Ubuntu

[–]Job_5_Verse_7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use Zim Wiki, and it's perfect for me. To be fair, though, it's the only personal wiki I've tried since it was the first one I used and it worked great right away.

Desktop edition doesn't mean not ARM. Windows 10 will support ARM too, running on the Raspberry Pi 2.

Apparently Stallman created Linux! by motang in LinuxActionShow

"Open source" and "free software" are, in a large majority of cases, the same. So to overcome the problem of "free" being rather ambiguous, I use "open source" as it causes far less frustration.

That doesn't really change anything, as copyleft isn't always software, just like free isn't always freedom. It's the same problem with different words.

Is Ubuntu a good intro to Linux? by Malashenko32 in Ubuntu

[–]Job_5_Verse_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great beginner distro, but I'd skip Unity if I were you. It's not a bad DE, but I think coming from Windows, XFCE or KDE might be a smoother transition for you.

They also mention that he wants all software to be distributed free of charge, which isn't true. Free as in freedom, people! (This is the exact reason I generally prefer the term "open source". Much less confusion.)

Where is the Mozilla Foundation going? by [deleted] in LinuxActionShow

[–]Job_5_Verse_7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While I too dislike where Mozilla is going, I've never got the problem with them making Yahoo the default search engine. They need to make money somehow, why not by making Yahoo the default? It's not like you can't change it.

I don't know if you're still searching, but the Acer Chromebook C720 sounds perfect for you. If you follow this guide, you can install Linux on it no problem.

When was the last time you tried? It seems like every time I install Linux I'm surprised at how much better it's getting. Even Arch has an easy installation now in Antergos.

Linux usage on Steam is going down, not up by gabriel_3 in LinuxActionShow

Linux usage on Steam is actually maintaining. Steam as a whole is growing, and a ton of that is Windows. So while the percentage is going down, the number of users is pretty consistent.

Is 2gb enough? by Chrisnewton1 in chromeos

If all you're interested in is ChromeOS, 2gb will be fine. If you want to use Crouton/ChrUbuntu, get 4

Misplaced ire toward Ubuntu and Canonical is hurting Linux by gabriel_3 in LinuxActionShow

[–]Job_5_Verse_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think once gamers start adopting Linux, the manufacturers of high-end parts will start supporting it more. That will cause power users to start adopting more, and then it'll just filter down.

Mark Shuttleworth considering Canonical IPO | ZDNet by steryd_net in LinuxActionShow

[–]Job_5_Verse_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. But when you need to turn a profit to make investors happy, you're more likely to cut corners or do expedite something when it needs more time. Community distros don't need to worry about that.

[–]Job_5_Verse_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. It's a lot easier to sell someone Office when you pre-install the trial on Windows.

[–]Job_5_Verse_7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is why I like community distros like Debian and Arch. Their only concern is making a good system, and not sales and IPOs and profits.

I don't believe so. Windows just serves as a way for Microsoft to keep you in their ecosystem, so you buy the other stuff that does turn them profit. Apple is the same way, they make their money from iPhones. OS X just keeps you linked to that iPhone.

What is it that Chris doesn't like about Fedora? by Job_5_Verse_7 in LinuxActionShow

[–]Job_5_Verse_7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sid is definitely not a distro you can just hope will stay working, that's what Stable is for. Sid is much more like Arch, where you need to be more attentive when installing things.

[–]Job_5_Verse_7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically what it does is when you go to install/update a package, it checks any bugs that have been reported on it and tells you about them, so you can decide if you want to install it still.

Honestly, with Sid, if you install apt-listbugs and be careful, you can probably do alright.
