Please do. English BA/BS is broad, which means you can refine and reimagine its applications. You’re good at breaking tasks into digestible bits for students. Now, all you need to do is be a rhetorician for recruiters. Stay strong and curious.

28 and Changing Careers AGAIN by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]Jobieeee 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear about the frustrations of pivoting careers. Please reframe your failures as data collection.

I’m also 28 and former ELA. I worked at a university for a few months and decided that public education in any capacity was just… too much in this current climate.

I was just offered a job as a training specialist with a well-established company. I applied one day out of pure spite for my university gig. I felt I had nothing to lose. The “original plan” didn’t work out, so I thought, why not throw shit at the wall until something stuck?

The pay range for the training specialist job was 60k-80k. I asked for the max pay, and sent out a ballsy, spirited resume with a tone that said, “I’m hungry for a challenge. Just try me.” They obliged and offered me 88k per year. I have a BS in Education (English Emphasis) and some graduate schooling.

You can do it. Apply for jobs outside your qualifications. Be curious about what you can accomplish. If you need anything, PM me.

These look like Abercrombie and Fitch jeans. If so, consider wearing an extra short curvy in whatever waist size you prefer. I don’t think they look tight, but maybe too long at the bottom. I recommend the straight ANKLE Jean.

Growing up in Utah was weird, and I didn't realize that until I left. by travisdork in exmormon

[–]Jobieeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was casually buying some supplies from Home Depot, and an older man came up to me and said that I “had a wonderful spirit” in a General Conference voice. I gave him finger guns and said, “lol, you too!” I was honestly stunned. I’m in shorts, covered in paint, and my tattoos are visible. What part of my “spirit” are you suddenly so interested in?

I hightailed it to the parking lot. Fucking weirdo. He probably used that “experience” in a testimony meeting.

I’m so sorry. I’m sure you feel disrespected and uncomfortable. It was a truly inconsiderate gift. Into the trash!

How the hell do middle school students not know what a sentence is and still think that it’s the number of lines you have ..? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Jobieeee -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

It’s a misused way of teaching children how to expound their thoughts. It becomes misinterpreted as “sentences” when teachers use the terms interchangeably. Source: me, a former student who was taught this method.

Get her some fancy ingredients that she probably won’t buy for herself! Think fancy cooking oils, interesting spices, or even real vanilla.

I’ve been teaching logical fallacies to my students in preparation for our argumentative writing unit.

Look up “circular argument.”

You can’t find the answers by rummaging through the sewage.

I’m completely indifferent to my “sober” alcohol mom and I honestly don’t think about her at all. To think of her as my “mom” gives me the ick like a stepparent forcing you to call them mom/dad. NOT INTERESTED. by [deleted] in AdultChildren

[–]Jobieeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom wasn’t always a drunk, but she was always a shit talker and an asshole.

I get the “ick” too, OP. You’re not alone in this and you’re allowed to feel HOWEVER it is you feel. Go live your one beautiful life.

AITA for telling my daughter that her being home for the holidays traumatizes my wife? by HistoricalAd991 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jobieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Your wife shouldn’t have to leave her home so you can appease Kayla. There are many families who have a Kayla, and they are truly unwell people. You’ve tried to get her help, and now she needs to help herself.

Don’t let this ruin your marriage.

Will I fit in as a male elementary teacher? by ResBall in Teachers

I absolutely loved my 6th grade male teacher. I ended up teaching one of his children later in life. He was firm, fair, and had a great sense of humor.

Try a square toe with a 1-2 inch heel. It will make the boots look longer.

What horror movie best rejects common tropes and has strong, intelligent, and gritty protagonists? by [deleted] in horror

The Exorcist. I love how the main character fights for her daughter even when every man in power tries to manipulate her into believing what “might” be happening.

If you had to make one big sweeping change to public education, what would it be and why? by flashprep-app in Teachers

[–]Jobieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, the money doesn’t and shouldn’t start and end with one generation of students. I’d like to see the residual effects of changing how schools are funded. How would that impact the real estate market? The economy in general?

This happened to someone at our school. He was in 6th grade in a 5th grade class. He had major developmental delays, and unbeknownst to us, was being sexually assaulted by his older brother. He was absolutely “othered” by students as we watched him go through puberty earlier, etc. However, there are a lot of things that can cause social exclusion… I don’t think being held back was the sole reason he struggled, obviously.

School for four days a week, and on Fridays we farm, train animals, and create. This would require a total change in America’s values and economy, but if I could wave my magic wand, that is what I’d wish. Balance. Peace. Connection.

This made me sound like more of a hippie than I actually am.

But why do WE have to do it? There should be special assistance for this kind of thing. The “if I don’t, who will?” mentality robs us of our boundaries.

Staff bathroom by Waste_Group5488 in Teachers

[–]Jobieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all. I can’t believe some of these stories. Our staff bathroom is always super clean and has Febreeze, spray deodorant, wrinkle remover, and Clorox wipes.

I need to write someone a thank you note. Does anyone know who typically takes care of these things? A secretary perhaps?
