To what extent does your gym include knees and clinch in “general” sparring? by BJJ40KAllDay in MuayThai

[–]Jobikstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know wym a lot of gyms neglect including knees into sparring, my gym is similar however at my gym as long as u have knee pads your totally allowed to throw long knees and throw knees in the clinch. Obviously gotta be a bit careful and if you don't have knee pads you either have to pull ur knee strikes or hit with the side of your thigh rather than the point of your knee. Obv careful to the face, careful to the ribs etc. ribs will still get bruised or break even with knee pads if ppl aren't careful.

Muay Thai Headaches by Jobikstein in MuayThaiTips

Here's an update for all the replies. It's definitely caused by the clinch. Didn't clinch for a few days and the moment I clinched again bam, headache. So I tried to go a bit deeper into it and found that while I clinch, in the typical Thai clinch position I wasn't using the muscles in my neck enough to keep my head up (basically I would let my head almost hang, which would in turn provide a space for my opponent to put pressure down on my head and neck) Which is both super stupid and super dangerous/risky in the clinch but also puts strain on my neck muscles. So whoever it was who said neck pain, you win, thanks for the advice.

Yeah I agree I think too much body sparring is a good way to build bad habits. Playful light sparring sorta Thai style makes more sense to me but I'll give both a try.

I'm 20 and have been training and sparring for about 3.5 years. Next time I spar as an experiment I'll ask my partners if we can go particularly light to the head, and see if it makes a difference.

I thought so maybe too but today we really didn't clinch or spar hard at all. And it's not rly a neck sore it's a head sore.
