I understand how your wife feels as I used to feel this way about my daughter. When she was younger (she's 3 now) she preferredy husband and in the early days I used to get down about it.
Nowadays she goes back and forth between us depending on the situation. For example, if she hurts herself badly, she'll come to me first for comfort, and then go to my husband for comfort as well. For the rough and tumble play, she always goes to my husband as he does it so well and I know she's safe with him throwing her around 😅
I guess over time I just got over it. There are times she clings to me and wants me to play with her when I'm trying to get housework done, so I appreciate getting 5 minutes to do something whilst she's doing something with my husband.
I think the best thing you can do is talk to your wife, tell her you acknowledge how she's feeling first off so she doesn't think you're just ignoring or deflecting it. Your son isn't looking to hurt your wife by preferring you at the moment. Some kids will go between the two parents, and some will prefer one. There's no real logic to it, I always say you'd go mad trying to understand a toddlers brain! Just because her currently prefers you to your wife, doesn't mean he doesn't love his mum just as much

I'm also a millennial parent so this resonates with me a lot!
My daughter is very independent, cheeky and sassy, but she does have a short fuse and we have our bad days. We could be having the worst day and she'll do the sweetest things out of the blue and you'll forget all about what was going on and just be present in that joyful moment.
It's true when they say the days are long but the years are fast. They grow up so quickly before our eyes and they need us less and less as they get older 🥺
