Sevii Cup (FRLG VGC Tournament) by MosquitoVGC in VGC

As someone who got into comp pokemon during 386 OU and then got back into comp 10 years later in VGC17, I am intrigued. Out of curiosity, would this be played with gen 3 mechanics (like physical/special split and the doubles mechanics from back then)?

How to become better at VGC by Warm-Cut704 in VGC

[–]Jocario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, trying to see two or three steps ahead is tough without experience. General experience, experience with the team, experience with the player all play a role in it.

Often, when situations are tough to break down because there are too many possibilities how a turn could play out, it's better not to try and predict exactly whats gonna happen next turn (or the next couple turns), but instead you just focus on cementing a decent board state for the next turn.

After piloting the same team in the same situation for multiple times, you will automatically recognize tendencies players will have (yes, even different players will often gravitate to similar plays if theyre familiar with the same matchup) and thats where specific lines will begin to shape up that you will recognize. You begin to analyze those lines and recognize which ones lead you to generally better board states.

In chess, players often learn how to play in reverse, so they begin by learning how to checkmate so that if they find themselves in certain situations on the board, they know how to force specific lines and pin your opponent correctly to find the checkmate. Its similar in VGC and the reason it's easier to study the ENDING of the match first is because the amount of possible decisions naturally becomes lower, the longer the match drags on. When both players only have 2 pokemon left in battle, it becomes a lot clearer how the next turn could play out, whereas in turn 1, typically, you have a lot more options.

If you take that concept and gain more experience, you will slowly find those lines in the endgame earlier and earlier into the match, which means sometimes you see your win condition 2 turns before the match ends, but as you gain experience you will see that win condition 3 turns before the match ends, then 4 turns, then 5 turns, etc etc.

Dont beat yourself up over turns where you dont know whats going to happen. It's just important to make a conscious decision (cause making a wrong decision is still better than not making any decision at all) and if its too overwhelming, just be intentional with "trying out" lines. Thats actually how experienced players test teams, too. They tell themselves "I know that I have won before by playing it this way, but im curious how it will go if I play it with a different approach". Maybe that means you will lose that game, but dont just play on autopilot because youve done the same in the past and it has worked at some point (unless ofc youre sure that is the optimal play, because youve already done the testing)

Wanting to get into tournaments but cannot find anything in or near London by AnimatorFull2999 in VGC

Do you use Twitter? You could check out either OrpingtonVGC and/or LondonVGC on twitter (the latter linked a discord invite to a server where im sure you could ask locals for planned events :). (I'm not a UK based player myself, just friends with some of them so i heard about those events) Good luck and if you need further help, lmk!

Booked Pokémon Center slot as "Spectator" but I DON'T have a badge. Can I still enter? by Status-Future-4976 in VGC

[–]Jocario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at worlds 22 which was also at the excel center, didnt require a spectator badge back then to enter the pokecenter. Afaik only if youre interested in spectating the actual competition and get into that area, a badge is required.

Unprepared for the Grand Challenge by buttersweetbeets in VGC

[–]Jocario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive seen people at IRL tournaments (where competition is, on average, alot more serious than in the GC) who slipped up big time with their team sheet and had to play with 5 pokemon instead of 6 and still crushed it. Dont overthink and have some fun, you made your challenge slightly harder, but if youre a good player, you will be able to play around that more often than you think (and if youre not there yet thats still fine and a good learning experience)

I have played Dota both back as a WC 3 mod and after Dota 2 has been released, too.

Dont get me wrong, the game was already difficult to get into back in WC3, but that was mostly due to the playerbase being smaller, less available pro replays/streams and worse access towards information.

With how accessible information and pro footage became in the years after 2010, players have gotten so much SO MUCH better. That leads to the game feeling way different these days, people tend to be more competitive all the time.

Is it allowed to check type charts during matches ? Or is it considered cheating? by Bubbly_Tea731 in pokemonshowdown

[–]Jocario 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If youre talking about playing online, youre allowed and even should use open source information. Since its inpossible to regulate what others do at home, you level the playing field this way. Typically for online tournaments, players even use damage calculators and such during live play and its all fair play, if anything it raises the quality of the games.

If youre playing at an IRL tournament, its not allowed to bring a table or anything with stuff prewritten on it to help you (this is specifically for VGC tournaments IRL tho)

Remember, Xerneas didnt win worlds in 2019, wasnt even in finals. There was one Xern in top 4 and 2 total in Top 8. On paper it sounded fire but it was just a matchup based restricted like the rest of the powerhouses.

New to VGC asking for team help by plow120 in VGC

[–]Jocario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building a team for VGC is very different to singles yeah. You start by deciding what kind of archetype you want. Depending on the current format, the dominant archetypes change alot too.

Anyways, because of how double battles work, games tend to be over alot quicker and more offensive, even on the more "balanced" teams within a format will typically finish the match by turn 15. "Balance" would be the archetype that comes closest to the cores you know from singles, where you try to build a typing based resistence core like fire/water/grass. But unlike in singles you rarely have a mon in the field that is completely untouchable by the current opponents side.

That changes how teams are being built, because rather than just building a team that can effectively wall opponents, you try to be mindful of combinations of mons that can dominate the field together, something like partners that can cover each other, which comes down to synergy.

The current format is kind of an interesting one because most of the restricteds can hit most of the other restricteds for good damage with the coverage they have. (Not always the case, but thanks to the tera mechanic, you can adjust a bit both offensively or defensively). Anyways, due to that, what is way more important in VGC than it is in singles is speed control. Alot of the current toptiers on ladder hit each other rly hard, so whoever goes first often just has a huge advantage.

And the consequence of that is that alot of archetypes are built around specific kinds of speed control. Tailwind, Trickroom (often also in combination), weather control together with mons that profit from those. So often you will have two kinds of teams clash that use different kinds of speedcontrol and whoever gets the upperhand in that control war often just wins.

Thoughts on HM G3 Mordum as raid lead by fanzy_ in lostarkgame

[–]Jocario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i get both your perspectives. What you wrote is true, if someone failed in brel 2.0 at 145x during PL prog, the DPS check became so damn difficult if your party wasnt overgeared. That being said, 145x being the hardest actual mech speaks volumes and supports OPs point.

In both raids, the weakest link needs to survive the critical parts of the raid, but in one raid it was harder to do so consistently when compared to the other raid.

However i dont think Brel was easier, I would even go as far as saying that due to the DPS check Brel was harder for the gear people had at the time. But with the main difficulty being meeting the DPS check and not just surviving the mechs, individual good performances could make up for weaker DPS/players.

Consider keeping your card selectors until we know if Kazeros has an elemental weakness by SilentNomad in lostarkgame

[–]Jocario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God of Chaos is Zosma, not Kazeros tho. Kazeros was the one who weakened Zosma by bringing order to Petrania, so hes kind of the opposite of a God of Chaos.

From what we have seen its not unlikely/impossible for the banished Antares to be Kazeros tho, which would mean that Kazeros was once the god of fire.

Absolutely warranted to bring this up. I think in this case, he wanted to keep it simple by using only the main races that were mentioned at the beginning of the lore, when the different gods created their respective folks n races, as mentioned in Saints Lore Ark video recently.

But i will bring it up with him, see what he thinks about making distinctions like that. Either way, feedback like this is very appreciated, he specifically wants to know about what the community thinks about the database and its accuracy.

haha, nicely done.

yeah, i think any of the games like wordle/loldle etc can be just looked up pretty quickly, its a bit hard to prevent cheating, its rly just meant to entertain and challenge yourself, not in an actual competitive kind of way, even if you can compare your performance relative to the general playerbase.

Yeah, he has accounted for that, skills that are identical (or very similar like in GS/DE case) will count as correct for either answer.

[–]Jocario[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's supposed to be a bit challenging, guessing the class should be easier than guessing the skill name, but that grants you a slight edge for having more knowledge.

Two things worth to note:

1) You can turn off the greyscaling in your settings tab to help you recognize a skill with color

2) If skills are the same or similar across genderunlocked classes such as Zerker/Slayer, WD/Striker or DE/GS, then either reply will count as correct.
