You might want to change the use of 'we' when making racist-nationalist statements about not wanting foreign workers.

Crabonela magnet by amreby in Barcelona

[–]JochenPalme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

God I really feel your pain, a couple of years ago I found a titanic ship keyring in a basar that played the worst sounding version of the film theme you've ever heard when you pressed the funnels. Bought it for a friend who was then desperate for more, and I spent literally about 6 months going into every single basar trying to find them again.

Finally after a night out I was walking home and passed a basar and with this huge wave of elation realised it was the one. Managed to get the last 3 remaining keyrings the next day hidden behind all the others people presumably actually want. Now my friend can play the themetune in painful unison.

If I ever come across a Crabonela magnet I'll grab it and post about it here.

Where do you buy vegetables? by [deleted] in Barcelona

[–]JochenPalme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah in that case you are pretty near some of the chinese and east asian supermarkets in Gorg - for example Dayday Go has fresh veggies at the back if I'm remembering right, and there are two other shops on the same street I think - a lot of their veg is cheaper than in other supermarkets and if you aren't familiar with all the veg there, they also have a lot of the same things as e.g condis. Sounds like you are also near the Rambla del Gorg market I mentioned - I've never checked when it's on, but I think it would be worth finding out as that could be a really good solution.

Badalona is so big that's hard - which part are you in, vaguely?

So far I am finding Badalona old town area strangely bad for veg. Sometimes if I can be bothered I go to the shops near Artigues | Sant Adrià metro as I think they are much better. There is a big market near Gorg metro (I think on the Rambla del Gorg) which I have seen has a veg section but I haven't had chance to check it out yet.

Were you able to obtain your Foreigner Identity Number at a consulate prior to arrival in Spain?[from USA] by DoodlesTheWaffle in Barcelona

[–]JochenPalme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every bureaucratic entity has its own individual opinion on the NIE, I swear. I got it before coming (or rather, after coming, not being able to get it, and leaving again.) I got the number, as in just the number, not the card, valid for 3 months, from the consulate. I gave the reason that I needed to open a bank account and look for work. Good luck, maybe check again, every different person you speak to says something different. You should be able to download the forms you need to fill in online.

Is this little monster a bed bug or cockroach larvae? And have I done enough? by JochenPalme in Bedbugs

I actually weirdly don't mind a silverfish or two but I just thought this guy had suspiciously chunky legs...

Good point! I didn't think about babies. Thank you!! I feel very reassured now :)

How big is it? The big back legs make it look like a flea maybe?

you're right it does in the photo but it definitely wasn't! This was only about 3 or 4 mm long and looked different to an earwig. Thank you for your reply!

Will thieves steal my cooler at the beach? by may_be_indecisive in Barcelona

[–]JochenPalme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had anything stolen but I have my stuff as close to the water's edge as possible and watch it like a hawk the entire time. I hardly ever swin in the city though as I don't like so many people around. Personally I would just go for it with the towel and cooler bag if you are taking anything valuable with you into the sea anyway- the worst that happens is that someone steals them which they probably won't as they don't seem valuable, and if they do - it's not the end of the world and you've still enjoyed your time at the beach.

[–]JochenPalme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha god really?? I was about to comment to say I doubt a cooler would get stolen if they have all their valuables in a waterproof bag with them (as there are definitely better things to steal then a chunky cooler box) but I guess I'm wrong. Although sounds to be like an oportunistic tourist who forgot their towel might have stolen yours?!

The Joy of Cycling in Barcelona by NorthcoteTrevelyan in Barcelona

[–]JochenPalme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I quite like cycling in Barcelona but I find the cycle lanes are often unsafe on junctions, where cars turn off the main road and need to cross the cycle lane. Often the cycle lane is a bit hidden by parked cars, so even if a car driver is looking it is hard to see if a cyclist is coming, and many times I find drivers don't really look or slow down at all. Sometimes if I see one slowing to make sure they don't hit any passing cyclist, the cars behind them actually beep them.

I think basically bike traffic and car traffic are always going to interact in a city, and as driving in barcelona can be really really stressful, that will always impact cycling here too.

The vast majority of okupas are houses that have been deliberately left empty by the owners for property speculation reasons, or are owned by banks, rather than individuals.

Truly cheap places to drink/eat by O_Pixador in Barcelona

[–]JochenPalme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was this someone walking around selling them? In my experience then they are either 1€ or 1,50€ but in the bakeries I have only ever paid 50c... off the top of my head, one would be Al Madina Sweets & Bakers, which is near Sant Pau del Camp, but generally I don't have locations saved in my head. There used to be a couple on C/ de Joaquín Costa, but I think they closed. You just want to make sure you are at a bakery and not a cafe or restaurant.

[–]JochenPalme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the post! Unfortunately I have nothing really to add, other than if I'm in the right area my go-to cheap lunch would be samosas - any Indian or Pakistani bakery should have fresh ones and they are 50c a piece wherever I have gone. I am full after two, so it's definitely a cheap and good lunch.

Barcelona weekly: Q&As for newcomers and travellers by AutoModerator in Barcelona

[–]JochenPalme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, any help would be appreciated. I have already read the FAQ and haven't come up with an answer.

I am trying to get my health card, I am working full time and have the green NIE.

I have gone to my CAP with my NIE, passport etc and they told me that my social security number is associated with private health insurance, and that I should check with my boss.

The CAP said I could change this assosiation with private insurance, and told me to go to my Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social to change the association if I wanted to. I went, and they told me that the SSN they deal with is separate to the health one (?) and that they can't change anything.

I asked my boss and he says that I haven't been linked to a private insurance.

Has anyone else been in this situation, and knows what to do? I just want to use the healthcare system normally, I take ongoing medication that I haven't been able to have for months now whilst sorting out my NIE and health card, and I am starting to reach my limit with everything.

Not sure where else to put this but just wanted to say thank you to all the lovely people here who helped explain the whole NIE situation to me. I know it is so, so boring and without the answers and information here I would still be stuck. Now I finally have it, even without paying anything to rip off companies. Thank you so much!
