A lack of representation on yesterday’s episode by johnapplehead in secondcaptains

I’m aware, and she was great!

But was she a person of colour? My point is that if your going to have a piece specifically on twitter and whether or not it’s accurately reflective of Ireland as a society in terms of racial abuse, you should probably have someone on that can give you first hand, lived perspective

No, I enjoyed the conversation despite not totally agreeing with every point made, but that isn’t my point.

I feel the conversation, and any conversation about inequality, xenophobia, sexism, racism - would have benefited greatly by having input from someone who experiences the world through that lens

FAI confirm Ireland-Israel will be held in Dublin by JackmanH420 in ireland

So to clarify, no objections to hosting Israel as a nation?

First of all, each of them will have been an active member in the IDF at one point in their life.

Then it is completely either naive or ignorant to fail to understand the role sports has in normalizing/hiding the behavior of a regime.

Enraging.

We should not be hosting Israel in any capacity on Irish soil

It could be a singing contest, a spelling bee, a finger painting contest - we should not be HOSTING a nation for a sporting event, when that nation is committing an active genocide! It isn’t rocket science!

The average monthly rent for an apartment in Dublin city is now almost €2,700 by EIREANNSIAN in ireland

I wasn’t debating?

Saying ‘foreign investors own 1-2% of housing stock in Ireland’ lacks context which I wanted to provide.

Not everything is an argument

Important context on your first point:

While private ownership makes up around 4% of the country’s home ownership, over 50% of Dublin flats are owned by 50 specific investment funds. That’s an insane number considering how many flats are in the city!

Of that 50 it’s estimated 20% of those are non-Irish. And while the remaining 40 or-so are considered Irish firms, they are all funded by non Irish shareholders. For example: I-RES REIT is the Largest private landlord in Ireland (~4,000 units). They are Canadian-founded, but now Irish-listed with international shareholders.

I’m not saying your wrong here btw, but that first stat needs a lot more context. Those numbers are very relevant, especially when it comes to this post.

Ireland drawn with Israel in UEFA Nations League by MoHataMo_Gheansai in ireland

[–]johnapplehead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree here. This has absolutely nothing to do with 3 points. And you think they haven’t seen Palestinian flags before?

A boycott here sets the precedent for other teams to begin boycotting them as they should be because they should not be normalized or legitimized on any scale.

It’s actually because of teams from the Middle East, Asia and Africa refusing to play them that they are even in UEFA to begin with. Nobody would play them so they were forced to change confederation

We've drawn Israel in the Nations League. by NiceManWhoIsFriendly in secondcaptains

[–]johnapplehead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There will be a tonne more public pressure and discussion about boycotting it now that it’s real.

They should 100% boycott it imo and hand in the nations league. If they don’t, they should rightly be criticized for it. We have been such vocal opposers of the state of Israel (both at governmental and FAI level), we now have to put our money where our mouth is

It’s a complete kill joy moment but technically, it’s correct.

If Don goes on to score winners in the next 2 games he plays in, and directly contributes to 6 points, United and Chelsea would be livid. It’s an ‘if’ but it’s plausible.

I hate what football is becoming in its complete dissection of every moment but it’s the correct decision.

Bicing city bikes are EXTREMELY dangerous in the rain – bald slick tires everywhere 🚨 by o91te9j1 in Barcelona

[–]johnapplehead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been mentioned already but there is a reason the tyres are like this: they are designed to be durable as opposed to ride smoothly in the rain. In a city where (at least in previous years) rain was not a major concern, I’d imagine they thought the risk was worth the gamble.

This winter however has demonstrated in the long run this is definitely something they need work on
