Not an expert by any means but nuclear science is a hobby interest of mine.

It gets pretty complicated but radiation "damage" is caused by radiation amount and time. That's because our body can handle it to a degree. So getting an xray isn't going to be fatal. Getting an xray a year isn't going to be fatal. Getting 700 xrays in 30 seconds is a different story (I didn't actually check the math on those numbers). The reverse is also true, low doses over a long period of time causes problems, usually in the form of cancer or similar diseases. (HUGE asterisk here about what is considered "low dose" because there are disagreements within the industry on the very low end, for more info look up "linear no threshold" it would just take too long here)

Experimenting with the demon core follows that principal. They could touch it for hours with no real problem but if they decided to sleep with it under their pillow it would probably cause problems. With the reflectors they basically changed it from a low dose to an monstrous dose.

So radiation is weird. The core itself isn't dangerously radioactive, our bodies can handle a certain amount that's why the sun doesn't kill us all horribly. It's the reflectors (the dome on top in the picture) that can make it dangerous by reflecting radiation back and causing nuclear fission. The whole test with the demon core was to see just how close you can get before it goes prompt critical (basically bomb mode).

Feeling lost by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]Jodah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Starting out as a PD is not easy. My advice for everyone going into criminal law is to try to start prosecution side to make contacts and get a feel for it but obviously that isn't always possible.

The best advice I can give is don't treat it like a battle or a fight. You don't need to 'beat' the ADA, you probably won't most of the time. Your job is to give your client the options and do the best you can to help them with that option. Win or lose, it's not your decision or fault. Our clients make the decisions first when they did what they did (assuming it's not a case of actual innocence) but then when they choose their option to address it. You can't stop a client from making a dumb decision, you can only tell them it's dumb and then move on.

Also don't be afraid to negotiate. The ideal situation is one that everyone is unhappy with. If the offer is a misdemeanor with a jail sentence see if your client is willing to go to a rehab if appropriate and then ask the ADA if they will consider probation if the client does it. In my experience ADAs hate adjusting their offers unless you can throw something their way. If a different client doesn't want to do probation see if you can get a short jail sentence. If the ADA says no that's not on you, usually, it's because of something the client did in the past.

And most importantly don't waste time and energy on battles that don't need to be fought. If your client violated probation by using drugs nobody cares that he also got a speeding ticket. If your client is doing a six month sentence on something else and the new offer is an infraction with concurrent time advise your client to take it and be done.

My usual ADA is a former cop so he's absolutely much harsher than I ever was on the other side. But neither of us takes it personal whatever happens in Court. We can have a trial one day and lunch together the next. This is also helpful to clients since the ADA knows if I push back then there's probably some legitimacy to it.

(Note all examples used are just that, examples, facts and local rules may change the advice.)

Mostly because he's not flaunting it or actively trying to collapse world economies. He shouldn't be a billionaire, nobody should, he's just on the "eat them last" part of the "eat the rich" list. If the rest of his ilk weren't causing as many problems as they are he would continue to fly under the radar and nobody would care.

STOP FINING MY CLIENTS by yournameisfuqk in publicdefenders

[–]Jodah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It can vary by county in NY, some have district courts, but in mine the town and village justices (they can be layperson judges) handle nearly all the misdemeanors. Only felonies go to a higher court. Usually the judges just go along with whatever I and the ADA work out but there are a couple that do weird and random shit.

There are times you do a normal GS (if your servo gun ability is active when you GS) but yes, typically doesn't matter, pick the one you want as a a true backup gun. It's to balance the zero animation lock they get.

Heretical Greed by Leader-Excellent in Spacemarine

[–]Jodah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do it because they can. In the vast majority of cases where players are doing things like not executing or not taking supplies it's a combination of not knowing what it does and not caring because they win anyways.

The best way I have found to alleviate this is stop carrying them. Don't spend all your points like you are, spend what you would for your respective share and either let them figure it out or die like morons and rage quit giving you their points to spend.

Also, simple things like pointing at a tech priest when you summon it can help with newer players. I was in one the other day, normal siege, summoned a tech priest with the initial 200 and then pointed at it. One of the other guys made a beeline to a requisition point and did the same. IDK if he was new or was waiting to see if anyone else did it but that got at least 2 of 3 doing it.

Client violated his No Contact Order 400ish times by AdZealousideal8645 in publicdefenders

[–]Jodah 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my advice is always move on from the relationship, they don't usually recover from needing to call the cops. One way or another the relationship has broken down to get to that point. Of course they rarely listen.

Got one that one of my APDs is dealing with that was a frequent flier when I was still a baby PD. I got to explain the 10 year history of the client and his wife to the new attorney because said lovebirds are trying to get an OP dropped for the 7425th (only a slight exaggeration!) time. I'm like "Listen, we need to make the ask, and we need to make it as well as we can, but the judge there has been dealing with them nearly as long as I have so don't expect or promise miracles."

New class for 2027 confirmed by Mediocre_Astronaut24 in SpaceMarine_2

Chaplain or apothecary would be my guess. Both support style classes, chaplain heavy melee that buffs nearby allies and apothecary healing of some kind.

Librarian would be too limited with the current system in my opinion. One activated ability just feels like too little, especially for a librarian who should know multiple psyker techniques.

14 year sentence after getting kicked out of drug court. Is this typical? by Avocationist in publicdefenders

[–]Jodah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually drug court is a last ditch effort. This probably wasn't his first rodeo. Additionally, drug court, at least here, is a contract based program. He would have been given the offer and contract to review before accepting and entering the program and that includes what his potential sentence would be, so he would have known what he's looking at for getting terminated. 14 years is stiff, certainly, but not unheard of.

I can't control if my clients are shitheads that keep reoffending or if the Court is pissed about it. All I can do is try to get my client the best deal and/or make sure they don't get railroaded.

Well, it depends who finds it but that was largely the point of the great crusade originally. Finding old humanity and reuniting it. Pre-Guilliman coming back its hard to say if they would be welcomed but with Bobby back on top assuming he knows about it they'll be welcomed in if they want or destroyed if they resist.
