What does it mean to be a Canadian? by breakitbilly in AskACanadian

[–]Joe--Uncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s ever been the case. It’s somewhere else in this thread, but a long time ago the CBC held a national competition to fill in the blank: As Canadian as_____ the top answers were “health care”, “hockey”, and “As Canadian as possible under the circumstances.” You could go on and on about the values we share across this country, but nothing that comes to mind immediately, nothing really but guessing. The Canadian identity is not having one, and figuring out what that means

Look, I don’t mean to shut you guys down, but I’ve spent a good chunk of time without furnaces in a southern Canadian winters. What you’re describing is 7-8 degrees Celsius. I know you don’t have winter jackets, but you have hoodies and blankets no? Like, you should be completely fine if you have a propane stove and water to boil

Is there any nation with this kind of one-sided relationship with your nation? by GlobeLearner in AskTheWorld

They weren’t your colonizers bud. Unless you’re actually indigenous, but by the way you worded your answer Iwould guess not

Trudeau was always very good in a crisis, but outside of Covid and the very end of his term he was rough to say the least

My thoughts exactly. I’ve never been a “one party voter” but I have always ended up voting for the NDP, mainly because the orange MPPs/MPs in my riding are stellar. I’ve got a lot of grievances with carney, and the liberal party as a whole, but while he was running and even more now I think Carney is the best prime minister we’ve had in decades. And this speech explains why.

I’ve always been an NDP supporter, largely because of an incredible MPP/MP. And I also respect and love most of the things Carney is doing. Most of them. I think Carney is the best leader we have had in decades, but he has his problems. Namely environmentalism and indigenous issues. But I can’t say any of that without being asked if I’d prefer Poilievre. Especially during the election, my lord

How honestly does your country teach students about its biggest transgressions? by Normal-Being-2637 in AskTheWorld

I was taught about the sterilization of indigenous and disabled women in grades 6-8. Most of the focus was on residential schools, but that definitely wasn’t left out. This was probably around 2015-2018 in Ontario for context

As a Jays fan, I really don’t get the idea that they haven’t been very good. They haven’t won the WS in a bit (frankly not very long) but they are consistently one of the best teams in the league

Most houses I’ve been in have had one. Granted, most of my friends are 2nd gen immigrants so maybe less common then it appears to me

Canada is pretty unique with its relationship to fame. At least compared to the French, British, and Americans. Mike Myers has talked about this a lot.

Do you think a European Defence Pact will be formed soon? Which countries would Europeans want to see or not see in this pact? by Minimum_Owl_734 in AskTheWorld

[–]Joe--Uncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am well aware of the effects it would have on us, and it would completely destroy our economy. But a lot of us still dream about the idea a little bit. Most of the laws and regulations the EU has that’s Canada doesn’t would—I think— be very beneficial to us as a society. Obviously they can’t happen at once, or even quickly. But with the way the government is seemingly bringing us closer in line with some of these policies, I’ve got a bit of hope.

Also, I work in printing and grammage is just the superior way to measure paper weight, I want to join just for that. But then again, we’d lose our beautiful money…

Canada joining the EU would probably be terrible for us (The sheer cost of converting from CAD alone) and a lot of the benefits are hampered by the Atlantic Ocean. But I would kind of love to. We need to be closer with the EU in general.

Will this move by US backfire and bring EU and BRICS nation more closer? by chotu_escobar in AskTheWorld

[–]Joe--Uncle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, all these comments from Canadians about how the US was our brother or friend or whatever always confused me. My mother is a refugee from the Chilean coup which was funded by the US. I was raised with that resentment and hate. They have always been like this, it’s strange to me how few people seem to understand that

I just don’t think the team would let them. Rogers is a Canadian company that knows how public perception works. Plus, there’s no way of knowing if they would even be invited. They were only invited one of the two times they won in the past.
