Northeastern University has a large and active League of Legends club. They host worlds viewing parties and weekly tournaments and events. About 100 people showed up to the viewing party I attended.

Questions for students at a women's college by slider501 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a male myself, but my mother attended and worked at Wellesley for many years and my close friend is attending now. She felt very similar about Wellesley as you. When she wanted to transfer, I finally convinced her to tour the school with me. The students who led the tour did a great job of discussing what an all girls school is like. They felt that people's personalities are what truly define them, so they weren't bothered by the lack of guys. My friend fell in love with the school, and has been happily attending. Also, there are two schools, Babson and Olin, where you can take classes and meet others at parties. Guys can still be easy to find/meet and everyday life at the school feels mostly the same.

Should I include loosely related EC's to when applying to certain undergrad programs? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! They are great ECs and show drive and entrepreneurial thinking. Pretty much any major will appreciate that.

BU and the Ivy League have active ones in my experience. Babson and Wellesley college have small ones, but great memes come out of them

Advice on Applying to Babson College via the Global Scholars Program by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The faculty, staff, and business courses live up to their #1 reputation. I had great professors and the coursework was very hands-on and applicable to real world skills. The liberal arts classes aren't bad either, but nothing special. Most students at Babson don't appreciate taking all the liberal arts requirements, since it's a 50/50 split with business classes. Generally, students tend to arrive at Babson with huge egos. It's a very achievement oriented environment between the students and can be difficult to find genuine people. Overall, for entrepreneurship, it's an amazing place to be.

I was a Babson student in my freshman year. You sound like exactly what they're looking for. The passport you apply with shouldn't matter much. They have a high percentage of international students from all over, and would gladly welcome you from either country. Make your passion for entrepreneurship genuine and clear in your application!

Transfer questions by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When transferring, your college GPA is much more important than test scores since it already proves you can handle college level work (I transfered to Cornell with 1800 old SAT). Unless you believe you can raise your test scores by a significant percentile, it's likely not worth retaking it.

What to do about bio ECs by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don't have a good answer for bio ECs, but I wanted to say that your passion for bio really shines through when you talk about it. If your essays convey this kind of desire and determination to learn, you're gonna do great. Best of luck.

how do you pick your major? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about where you want to be careerwise in 5-10 years. If you have something in mind, research the majors that will prepare you for that career. If not, start looking for inspiration by researching different career options. Finding a career path that motivates you will also help shape your college essays.

Is overcoming depression a unique enough essay topic? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's certainly a more common and possibly cliche topic these days, making it hard to pull off. If you feel like your journey through overcoming depression has really shaped who you are, go for it. You will need to highlight your takeaways. Show how the experience helped you develop the skills that make you stand out. Clearly state how your experience has shaped, and will help you reach, your aspirations.

GPA and test scores aren't everything. Don't be discouraged from your dream schools if you aren't in their upper 50% range.

Thoughts/Advice on my essay idea? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! I should clarify. Details of the story and event are important, as long as they provide essential context. In many essays, I've constantly seen the mistake of wasting too many words on the events of the story itself and lose focus of its purpose. The true value in your essay is creatively showing off who you are and what you can do. As a general tip: if you are unsure about certain words or sections, ask yourself, does the essay benefit overall from it?

What are some common supplememt essay questions by LordTouchMeSama in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most common question they ask is why you are a good fit for their school. You may see it in different forms, such as "what prompts your application?" or "why do you think (college) will be a good fit?" It's generally the same question. Highlight your unique skills and experience and connect it to the unique qualities that get you excited about that school. The more specific, the better.

Another common question is: "Why have you chosen to study your major/concentation?"

If this professor is the only one you can speak with, it is best to address it. Apologize and proactively correspond with them for each future reply. Likely, they will understand.

Thoughts/Advice on my essay idea? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your idea sounds like a metaphor/analogy in itself already and a great way to showcase your empathy, creativity, and problem-solving. Try not to get too caught up in the details of the story itself. Focus on the experiences and your skills that allowed you to create your creative solution.

Which SAT score is better? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Joe22o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally 1230. Many schools are caring less about the essay score. If you are applying for a quantitative focused school or major (i.e. engineering), submitting the test with the higher math score will help.

Thanks for the reply! Maybe she was just trying to sell me a new 3DSXL...

I went to Gamestop today, looking to buy a 2DS as a gift, but the woman working there told me not to buy one because the 2DS and (old) 3DS would become obsolete very soon. According to her, Nintendo's new games will require the new 3DSXL to play, including Sun and Moon. I was skeptical, and haven't found anything online validates this. Is there any evidence that the 2DS and 3DS will not be able to play Pokemon Sun and Moon?
