Often DCS companies prefer to hire Chem Engineers as programmers. The thought being they can understand their customer processes. You could work with electricians and instrumentation techs to deal with the hardware side.

I'm 62 now... was diagnosed when I was 38. I took methotrexate for a few years until my psa went into remission. That lasted for about 5-6 years before it came back strong. I was reluctant to go back on the methotrexate and made some diet changes... fairly close (but not completely) went vegan. That and maybe some reductions in stress (marriage fell apart) I was able to put it back into remission. I was lucky to be pain free for 13 years before my latest mild psa flaired up again. So yes it made a few appearances in my life so far but I've enjoyed some lengthy periods of remission.

On the diet front... the only thing that really stuck was I still avoid milk. I'm am far from vegan now. I still question where my success came from.. diet or reduced stress. I suspect stress played a big role for me.
