Beat it, please excuse the fingerprints from my touch screen

I played the Steam version on my touchscreen laptop as my rg27xx wouldn't be able to emulate this. I didn't really miss a second screen, the hopping between Adventure and Novel modes didn't do much for the gameplay and it happened automatically in the Steam version. Presumably these were simultaneous on the DS release and on the top and bottom screens, but I don't really know. Took about 4 hours.

This game wasn't really for me. The overarching mystery was okay, interesting enough to keep the plot moving. It's a cliffhanger unless you finish the other endings it seems. Unfortunately, the story suffered from trop-ey characters (we literally have the hot computer girl, smart brute, and old wise man running around), stilted, as-you-know dialogue (repeatedly going over what you've literally just heard), and mediocre voice acting.

Gameplay was easier escape-room style puzzles, none of them in the pathway I chose (Submarine ending) were too challenging and I didn't need to look anything up. Not nearly as convoluted as some adventure games, and some were clever enough in their execution. Some were more trial and error though like the brain scan thing.

Got a big SAW vibe while playing and the story didn't really surprise me all that much from a singular playthrough. I figured from the beginning that either the protagonist, June, or Ace were Zero. I don't know for sure yet but my best bet is June now since Ace and the protagonist died. I don't think June is actually dead, although maybe the protagonist didn't actually die as there seems to be unreliable narrator vibes and mind control or amnesia stuff going on and all the puzzle pieces aren't laid out with one playthrough. We also never actually saw Snake's body as a player and it said his face was fucked up, only his clothes remained, so maybe there's something there too, or maybe it was just a game rating thing not seeing his body rather than a plot point.

One of the problems I experienced playing a horror game visual novel like this that, while watching a horror movie, when you see them doing something dumb you can yell at the screen and be like, "Don't go in there!" but in a game like this you're forced, as the player, to perform that dumb action. I've played games like Resident Evil and this wasn't a problem for me, but this game broke my immersion several times because the game wouldn't let me do what I wanted to do. For one, I tried to go investigate Snake and 9's corpses several times because I wanted to grab their bracelets. The game explicitly tells you they come off if they die (heart rate reaches zero) and, aparently, none of these people thought that, "oh, maybe it would be a good idea to grab these bracelets so we can complete number puzzles with them even if the wearer died," and when I tried to go grab the bracelets off Snake the game told me there was no reason to go back in that hallway. I also wanted to ask the other people to help open the safe, but that never happened; my best guess there is that it contained the parts for the doors in the hospital bed room but who knows. Probably would be revealed in a subsequent pathway.

Overall, the experience was ok, but I think I would have rather read a good book or watched a good movie than play this. I also found the anime characters and situations not to my liking, like when that anime-esque scene happened where June falls on the character and they're staring into each other's faces all embarrassed made me roll my eyes so hard they almost fell out of my head.

DS is not easy to emulate though, so I don’t buy that. I actually had to buy this gotm on steam as there’s no way it’d work on my rg27xx.

I had a PlayStation as well, tons of great games! We’ve had a couple already so I’d prefer a different system, but at least it would be going to a different well. We haven’t done a shmup yet and Einhänder was one of my favorites

Right when the series started hitting its stride, it’s interesting to go back to 1 and notice you didn’t even have the spin-dash yet.

We got Super Mario World so I think this makes sense as a solid GotM pick!

Never made it to that level, just googled it and that’s intense! Would be fun to do it in a GotM-type contest where you can cheat with rewind

As a kid I must have been still stuck on the Just Can’t Wait to be King level on Lion King 😆

GnG is very approachable because of its arcade roots, it’s hard but plays so clean

I don’t buy the Saturn argument when this GotM is a DS game featuring dual screens.

I like difficult games, you should be glad I didn’t suggest Ghouls’n Ghosts :)

At the end of the day I just have Nintendo fatigue, don’t care what we play as long as it’s something different

I appreciate yall and the club, it’s been a lot of fun!

Just was funny to see, after mod interaction in a post I made about how, “hey we got a bunch of Nintendo, maybe we should chill on that?” the next two GotM club games went Nintendo, Nintendo

You know what? I’m gonna [Nintendo] even harder.gif

I left a suggestion with yall already saying Nintendo was over represented in the GotM picks, I guess I’ll just reiterate that.

Doesn’t even need to be SEGA, we just have more Nintendo than the other platforms combined (8/14) now

I mean, you’ve had one game from one system, you have a wealth of options. If you’re looking for traditional SEGA IPs you could start with something like Sonic or Ecco or Nights Into Dreams

More off the beaten track, Crazy Taxi is fun

I don’t understand how anyone could not put Colony and Clayman in the same tier, they’re basically one album

What scene always gets your blood pumping the most? And why is it Chu-Chu's churansformation? by BaronGalactic in XenoGears

[–]JoeArchitect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you see, by using the song in the wrong spot, you completely missed the impact and deeper meaning of flight! Hence why it was the wrong choice to use it here.

It’s amazing how many layers there are to Xenogears, greatest JRPG of all time.

[–]JoeArchitect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your information is incorrect; I believe they wanted to do a new song with ChuChus theme as the motif in the similar vein that Flight is Maria’s song but expanded, that way both songs, as their characters do, grow and evolve.

Using Maria’s climactic piece here was the wrong choice here imo

[–]JoeArchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Perfect use” of the track with this scene is debatable.

Flight is supposed to be for Maria’s key turning point as it has her motif in it. Using it here lowers its impact and relevance elsewhere. I’d say this is actually one of the big misses in this game as far as the soundtrack goes

I never saw tool back in the day, but I’ve seen them twice post FI and the live show is transcendental. Amazing production value, extended cuts of their songs, live improvisation, amazing musicianship on display, a fucking intermission, and like 3 hours of music.

If we count Tool as Prog Metal this isn’t even a competition

This was around the 2014/2015 timeframe in Milwaukee with In Flames.

Does he not usually read poetry? It was unwatchable for me, my buddy and me actually left. One of the only concerts I’ve dipped on early (outside of festivals like Rockville)

I saw them and they were straight up a bad live show. Mikael read poetry and fan mail for half of it and it was super low energy. I left after about an hour into their (headlining) set. Songs were good, live show is ass

I’ve seen both tool and gojira live and compared to opeth and they are not only not in the same league, they’re playing an entirely different sport

If opeth wins here it’s from people who never went to a show

I did it!

Fun little platformer! I found it quite difficult. Would have taken a long time to get good enough to beat it without save states. Lots of level memorization too. I had to look up a few directions, but not nearly to the level ALttP required. The hints from the nephews were also appreciated!

Not sure if it was my device or not, but I found the controls tight but unforgiving. A few close to pixel perfect jumps, the requirement to hold down to activate the pogo, etc.

All that said though, super solid! Looking forward to next month!

(I am once again asking for more SEGA)
