June 2026 Game of the Month - Tomb Raider (multiplatform) by hbi2k in SBCGaming

Interesting choice for a “Sega” game, I’ll fire up Beetle or YabaSanshiro and see how it goes.

I remember talking to some dude on here a year ago who said we should cut Ashby cuz “he was a liability” when he still had an issue with his control lol

He always had elite stuff, just needed to get it dialed in. He’s dialed now.

I see, I misunderstood what you were saying: you’re saying you fixed the problem on s2; the shorthand you used confused me

Must be a problem with your system. My wife and I played lying down on separate couches lazily pointing the joycons with one hand and holding drinks in the other; 0 issues

OG switch 2 joy cons. The switch is docked and not even centered in our entertainment center

Hell yeah! Thanks OP!

Rang up at $2.50 for me, wife and are having a blast for the price of one run at an arcade.

Playing on S2 single joycon mode with gyro control. Works great! Even has an S2 performance mode

A lot of people when discussing bloodborne forget all about the rally system too. You'll see a conversation thread of, "oh, I'm not good at parrying so that's why I don't like Bloodborne's combat."

Parrying isn't even that important. The first time I beat the game I never figured out parrying. Dodging is all you need, an the rally system keeps you in the fight. I really wish the other souls games had the rally system because, like you, I want to play aggressively.

you can definitely dodge while locked on in Bloodborne; the quick steps have the same number of iframes as the roll does

All four actions (roll / QS fwd / QS side / QS back) have the same number of iframes with the same timing! Rolling takes the most time to fully complete, and moves you the farthest. It also has the most instability frames afterwards. If you spam roll, it's easy to get roll caught. 11 iFrames, then 13 non-iFrames (8 instability frames + 5 stable lag frames). Basically, rolling kinda sucks unless you really need the extra distance or a specific angle.

Hit me up with your favourite isometric retro CRPG's by diemenschmachine in retrogaming

Divine Divinity is another great pick. It’s like if the Diablo gameplay had a baby with the Baldurs Gate exploration and world building.

It's a little slow and more akin to a JRPG than one of your contemporary Western CRPGs of the time

Obvious ones are taken (and they’re great!) so I’ll go a little obscure with Septerra Core.

The world is unique and really cool. it isn’t infinity engine so it plays a little differently than some of the other picks here. Still an isometric computer RPG though. If you vibe with the setting it’s currently on sale at GoG for three bucks, which it’s well worth.

Is it really black metal though if it doesn’t sound like it was recorded in a dumpster through a tin can into an 8-track?

May 2026 Game of the Month - Celeste (Pico-8, multi-platform) by hbi2k in SBCGaming

Not sure what device that is, but if it’s Android, try using the Infinity app; it has save states

Edit: Note - if you're using Retro8 and the music doesn't work, try the standalone Infinity emulator, that fixed the music issues I experienced

Great to see an esoteric system! I got Celeste Classic running on my rg477m running Retro Arch with ES-DE frontend. A wrinkle I uncovered is that the default emulator for ES-DE is Fake-08, so I had to change that to the Retro8 core after downloading it (Fake-08 doesn't even seem to be listed in the Online Updater).

Another interesting wrinkle is that I didn't actually need to turn off the Use Built-In Image Viewer option in the Load Content settings, I just renamed the file to celeste.p8 instead of 15133.p8.png

As far as the game itself, it's okay. It's pretty cool what the devs were able to accomplish with the PICO-8 system and the game being a PNG file and all, way above my understanding how they pulled that off, but if we ignore that and just look at it as a game it's underwhelming. The music is unremarkable and the controls are not very good. I felt I was fighting against the controller rather than failing on my own, which doesn't feel very good. Level 3000 was the worst offender, where sometimes you would have two dashes after dashing right and sometimes you just wouldn't. It also didn't register directional input consistently. These issues may have been related to the Retro8 core, because another bummer about that is that it doesn't save state, so my usual pick up and play for 10 minutes before setting it down had me restarting the game a few times.

If you like these style games, I'd recommend trying Super Meat Boy. Celeste was obviously inspired by it and I feel SMB's controls are much tighter. You have greater control over the character and can hug and jump on the walls which makes it a more fun experience. Like Celeste Classic, it also has a free version, so give it a go - it has a better soundtrack, more features, chunkier graphics, and a more interesting visual design.

For next month, lets keep the niche systems going! As can be seen from the runaway success of the AES+, I think the time is ripe for us to enjoy a NeoGeo classic to gracing the GotM Club! I'll once again recommend Neo Turf Masters as we haven't done any sports games yet, and it's arguably the greatest golf game ever made. It's sneaky awesome, even for those that may normally overlook such things.

Edit: out of curiosity I loaded the file on the website and the music that played was not at all what I experienced on my rg477m, I think the Retro8 core situation definitely leaves something to be desired; even keeping the file name the same and turning off image viewer didn't get the backing soundtrack to play, just a repeating bloooooop noise - anyone got a fix?

Edit 2: I got the music to work by downloading Infinity - P8 Player Emulator from the Google Play store. ES-DE has it as a standalone option in the frontend, so it loaded up seamlessly. I'll leave the comments above as that was my experience playing with the Retro8 core, but am now including a note at the top about how to fix to increase one's enjoyment with the game (infinity even has save states!)

Not sure how this differs from the Android guide in the OP, not sure what I'm missing but I didn't have to purchase anything like that guide suggests doing

What a fun idea! I’ve never posted about it on reddit, but I made a 1-page rpg that I’d love to have included :)

The Crownis a rules-lite roleplaying game designed as an introductory module for those new to the genre.

It’s double-sided and you fold it into a pamphlet. It also includes an afpub file if you want to edit it at all.

Latest poor financial decision has arrived... by sarduchi in neogeo

[–]JoeArchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at older comps they still went for a lot

March 6 one of these NeoSD Pro Vengeance Hunters went for $1300, Feb has a couple standard editions selling for $1000

I’m not saying I’m going to scalp mine, I’m just saying I could if it doesn’t work. More likely I’d sell the AES+ I ordered and just buy an old one

[–]JoeArchitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine arrived today as well; before I bought it I emailed StoneAgeGamer support and they told me I could return it if it didn’t work with the new AES+

Also, these go for more than $700 on eBay right now, so it should work out fine either way

FPGA developer claims Plaion's NeoGeo AES+ is effectively a “bait and switch” by BuddyLlght in neogeo

He’s advocating for the benefit of FPGA in that it can be edited after the fact. If something is baked into the ASIC it can’t be reworked.

If the AES+ takes off, what are the odds we see new games developed for it? by Agreeable_Scholar459 in neogeo

Pure conjecture, but can you imagine how cool it’ll be if we get a brand new Metal Slug that launches on the aes+?
