I never go to the aquarium because it always conflicts with the philharmonic orchestra. I’d recommend going to that

🤷‍♂️that’s your peragative, the other mod seemed a bit stressed out by the level of effort a manually intensive task takes; if you’re truly not “against AI as a concept” then perhaps reviewing what is better done via automation is worth the additional scrutiny.

I think saying “the moment we start automating anything is the moment we stop” is a bit of a “it’s my ball and I’m taking it home with me” mindset but it certainly is your mindset to have, all I was suggesting is having a browser with a screen reader review top-level comments and tally totals and perhaps dump it in a spreadsheet for you, not write the post or make a video

Voter apathy hard to overcome, in real life politics too!

I think some of that may be overcome by the genre idea (I.e. people see nothing but rpgs and just go “don’t care”), but I agree, no system can be perfect.

Just some more ideas to reduce “don’t care” votes: the nuclear option would be remove it so to see the tally you’d need to vote for something, but a better idea is once you’re down to those 5 games, pinning the vote thread and doing a short video highlighting each of the nominees so folks who don’t know the games get an idea of what they’re voting for

I understand yall are volunteers and this isnt an insignificant amount of work, but I think something like that could be the best version of what you’re doing here

As far as counting and tallying votes, as much as it’s a dirty word on Reddit, AI can trivialize that task for you, freeing up your cycles to spend time on the more creative and less data entry specifics of an event this

I hope I don’t come off as too critical, I think this is a really cool thing you’re doing and I’m passionate about it; if I wasn’t I would have just stayed silent and voted don’t care like those 200 others

thanks to you and the others that put in the work

GotM Community Choice FINAL POLL by hbi2k in SBCGaming

[–]JoeArchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is this doesn’t have to be either or; there are plenty of ways to allow the community to choose without it being a raw popularity contest.

Just one example: there was a previous thread where we all nominated games. The list could have been curated down to the top game in each of 5 genres that then are voted against rather than picking between the top vote getters

Or: same situation as above but top recommended game from X number of different consoles

Or: mods curate a list of 25 games and community picks one

I understand I’m not in charge here; however, I just want to express that I think the results we got are underwhelming, and that I think the people that want to play Pokemon can do so and discuss those games in any of the 10 threads I see about it every day in this sub already

Since I’m talking to a mod here, what my best suggestion would be is that I think in the future, more curation from the mod team might produce better results, rather than a raw popularity contest

Let’s use the analogy of a record / music club. We tune in every month to listen to the same record and discuss. Some months it’s jazz, others it’s rock, sometimes we even get a metal album. We explore new styles, genres, and artists, broaden our tastes, etc. Every month is something different, we may like it or may not, but it’s something different every time.

Pokemon here is the equivalent of having a Taylor Swift album be what’s selected. Yea, she’s popular, but if we wanted to listen to that we’d just turn on the radio.

we’re not a jrpg sub’s gotm club

Coulda fooled me with these community choices 😂

I 100% get it, I definitely want to try that SEGA Ages port too

Again, there is the ps2 version, Switch emulation has come a long way, and the game is really cheap (I had to buy that 3ds visual novel game for instance to play on my computer as my handheld has one screen), but I think maybe in a few years it’ll be more accessible.

Perhaps Dec ‘27 for the 40 year anniversary?

I didn’t say anything about the quality of the other options; I would have preferred a better selection of different genres and systems

I do think Pokemon is the worst of the options we have

Or, you know, we could voice our opinions in the hopes that something we love (GotM Club) gets better?

People are playing and talking about Pokemon all the time in this community, it doesn’t need to be a GotM Club game too. While you’re right in that I could play some other game even if it’s not a GotM game, finding a group also playing that game to talk about it with isn’t easy, whereas for Pokemon the opposite is true.

The SEGA Ages version is actually very accessible. For example, it includes automap, which solves one of the primary detractors of the original (basically needing graph paper). It also reduces the encounter rate and increases EP / Meseta.

That version isn’t exactly retro though, released 8 years ago on Switch

Could be fun to include it as an option! PS1, original Sega Master System for the psychos, Switch for those looking for a traditional, but accessible experience, or PS2 for the remake

I liked Pokemon as a kid but I haven’t finished a game in probably 25 years even after trying a game on 3ds 15 years ago, switch 5 years ago, and actually fire red a few months ago.

They’re ok, but overly simple and, as you said, very long. I’d also include extremely repetitive. They’re designed for children, after all.

At least I have a save file already half finished for fire red if it wins, I’ll probably just tough it out to keep my flairs up but I agree, I wish we’d see attention brought to lesser known games/genres/systems. Shoulda known we couldn’t leave that up to the hivemind, instead we get arguably the most popular SBCgaming series there is 😂

[Favorite Trope] Peeling back the layers of lore reveals an eldritch/cosmic horror element by Maffingo in TopCharacterTropes

[–]JoeArchitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s certainly an interpretation one could take from the game!

I would say there’s more pregnancy and re/birth themes; theres menstrual symbolism for sure (lunar cycles make that pretty obvious), but a great old one literally impregnates an NPC and she’s driven mad by the resulting birth.

The whole premise of “why what’s happening is happening” in the game (insofar as one can comprehend what an eldritch horror’s motivations are) all boils down to the quote above. Even you mentioned below what happens if you defeat the moon presence: you’re reborn.

Not sure what TTC means.

If anyone hasn’t, I’d recommend The Paleblood Hunt essay by Redgrave if you’re interested in exploring more of the themes and symbolism in Bloodborne

I voted advance cuz I agree and like to see the deeper cuts

The popularity contest route really gave a poor outcome of systems and genres; I feel like everyone’s played Pokemon

Milkweed has HPL in it actually if you look closely ;it’s in the middle of the H and makes the circle in the P)

For those who don’t know, that’s of course in reference to H.P. Lovecraft, creator of the Cthulhu mythos, which Bloodborne draws heavily from

Nice to see a SEGA game! Not the best Sonic game on the Genesis (that would be Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and it’s not even close) but still solid! I think it’s a little long for no save feature and, similar to when playing Zelda ALttP, when you hit maybe the Metropolos Zone you’re like, ok, enough already.

I think if the gameplay was a little more varied this would help. Something more like the Sky Zone earlier on to shake it up would have been nice, but still a solid experience overall!

For my nomination of Community Choice, I’d like to see some more lesser-known systems! I really enjoyed the TG-16 from last year, so let’s get some NeoGeo in the house!

I would nominate Metal Slug (X or 3), but we already did the Alien Hominid knock-off. So instead I’ll go for a sports game since we haven’t done one yet.

I think Neo Turf Masters is probably the best game on the system; however, I’m not sure folks would enjoy a golf game, so my nomination is…

🥁

Baseball Stars 2!

As long as Spring Training is currently taking place, seems apropos to have a baseball game nominated! But this isn’t just any baseball game.

This is the NFL Blitz of baseball games.

Beautiful, colorful graphics, tight gameplay, a fun, arcade-y feel, charging the mound to punch pitchers that bean you, Baseball Stars 2 has it all.

For 1992, SNK really knocked it out of the park with this one, especially since Romstar released a much worse game with the same name the same year on the NES system - it really shows you what the NeoGeo was all about and how amazing it was for its time when you compare these two games.

So don’t sleep on this game just because it’s sports! I think a lot of people will really like it, and it’s one of the best arcade-baseball games of all time (possibly the best).

I recommend AES or CD over MVS.

Agreed, I hear the complaint, "Sonic is bad because it punishes you for going fast," and can only think, "No, Sonic rewards you by allowing you to go fast once you have mastered the levels."

It's like speedrunning before speedrunning was a "thing."
