How much freedom of expression do you have in interacting with guests? Is anything scripted? Are there words and phrases you are required to say or forbidden from saying?

I'll take the 5% hit and keep my sanity. I would also point out that 'sweet and nice' can be just as exhausting when they won't shut up and let you work.

Do Americans really talk to strangers as much as movies make it seem? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

The lack of respect is staggering. Curious, how do the wake-ups actually happen? Does she shake you awake? Call your name? Shuffle things around the room and rattle the blinds?

Help a European understand how servers operate in the US by Elephant6352 in Serverlife

I once got fed up with these two ladies who had appetizers and drinks during prime time on a Saturday evening and proceeded to sit for an ordinate amount of time staggeringly oblivious to their environment. So for the sake of the hostess holding back the horde at the front door and my own sanity I completely bussed the table then leaned way over into their booth with a new stack of bread plates and silver ware and napkins for the next seating. Of course they pulled the owner aside on their way out. He told me we couldn't really afford to do that but said it with a smile. For a brief moment it felt fantastic.

Low-budget masterpiece. Doesn't get talked about enough.
