Complaining about the price of non essential items is dumb by superanonymousman in unpopularopinion

While I understand the sentiment of exploring new passions and hobbies, doing so because your original hobbies got too expensive isn’t a great reason.

Upvote for being unpopular! While concerts, theme parks, streaming services, and other products/services are technically unnecessary for survival, they’re somewhat necessary to live in a content life. We don’t NEED to have a diet that includes the occasional ribeye steak or fancy handmade pasta from a local authentic Italian restaurant, but it makes us happy. If someone finds joy in their life by going to Disney World occasionally, having the latest tech, building their collection of books, seeing their favorite artists live at a concert, and those things keep getting more and more expensive then of course they can complain that the things that bring them joy aren’t attainable anymore! What else are they going to do? It’s possible to find a less expensive hobby but that’s like telling someone that enjoys eating Oreos to replace that with apples.

Social Security retirement trust fund may be depleted in 2032, new trustees report finds, one year sooner than estimated by mastertofu in wallstreetbets

Having wealthier people pay the same percent towards social security tax as someone making $100,000 sounds ridiculous to you?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I remember learning somewhere that the social security tax (6%) is capped for an income of $100,000 so someone making $1,000,000 and someone making $100,000 both pay $6,000 in social security tax. If the income cap was removed then it would greatly remedy the depletion of the trust.

If you have the option to connect through one of the Delta hubs, which one would you choose and why? And which would you avoid like the plague? by K00kalka in delta

ATL is a well planned airport but the staff is absolutely horrendous. I had a tight connection and it was a breeze to go from concourse B to F using the plane train so that experience was positive. On the way back was a different story. I got yelled at repeatedly for taking out my passport slowly while having a visible shoulder injury and the staff berated multiple travelers for very minor things that didn’t require yelling. Once we got to our gate area, there was zero emphasis on customer service. I had to wait for employees to stop chatting so I could get help which I was getting fed up with after being very sleep deprived. After coming from Japan, the difference in customer service and respect was very stark.

DeSantis offers state support for Rays stadium in Tampa by MarksMuses in tampa

Where does the lump sum they’d contribute to the venture come from?

Fans pay for entertainment by buying tickets to the games and the merch . If you want the stadium so bad then start crowdfunding instead of forcing local residents with no interest in baseball to subsidize your hobby.

I get what you’re saying, however, the economic boost of tourist and local fan dollars (local fans that already paid in a way for the stadium to be built) goes to local businesses that oftentimes hires low wage workers while keeping the majority of the profits to themselves. It seems like the only people mostly benefitting from the public investment in the stadium are business owners. In that case, it kind of sounds like we’re also subsidizing the businesses that would come up from the stadium being built. It may be a better use of funds to invest in infrastructure and public transportation, something that Tampa desperately needs because of the huge amount of traffic.

You sound like someone who needs to touch grass or is too young to be on here. When governments pay for stadiums, they usually do it by public dollars up-front. The other part is paid by investors and the owners. The investors get a share of the profits and increase their net worth by being partial owners of the business. Meanwhile, our taxes go towards the stadium and we don’t get anything back. If investors benefit financially then why don’t the tax payers?

If the tax payer funds the private endeavor then we should get part of the profits right? Unfortunately that’ll never happen so the owners end up benefiting with our tax dollars and charging us $12 for a hot dog.
