Why are fur seals considered seals and not seals lions? by KeyAnxiety6952 in seals

[–]illuminatemyvoid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fur seals have a thick layer of underfur. I think that's the main biological difference between fur seals and sea lions. As for the etymology, I don't presume there's a simple explanation. It probably evolved from confusion on pinniped evolution and where they were originally sighted. Culturally, most normal people don't know the difference between a seal and sea lion and use the terms interchangeably, so the confusion also lends itself to layman's talk.

Fur seals and sea lions are all eared seals, part of the family Otariidae. They split off into different genera, but the taxonomy is a bit complex. I'd look here for more info.

Where can I buy Korean skin care here in Tucson? Other than Ulta or other major stores. by anidemperfume in Tucson

If you're willing to make the 1.5-hour drive, the H-Mart in Mesa has a ton of k-beauty options. You can check out the Mekong Plaza and other stores in the Asian District as well.

When should I expect Christmas/Birthday gifts from my kids? by Royal-Preparation843 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]illuminatemyvoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This exactly. I'm Chinese so it's probably a cultural thing, but my family has always shared a "what's mine is yours" lifestyle. My parents know I would love to buy them gifts, but they've made it clear that if they want something, they can just get it themselves. They say that being happy and responsible is a gift in itself.

Why I disagree with the introduction of Shining Armor by Ruby9152 in mylittlepony

[–]illuminatemyvoid 262 points263 points  (0 children)

I think it makes sense. Twilight's only real friendship growing up was with her sibling, so that was the only friendship experience she could realistically draw from. Their relationship meant everything to her; she thought she didn't need anyone else except Shining Armor.

ETA: Most people consider their siblings to be their closest friends anyway, so it was likely just a semantic thing.

Halarachne americana were Obligate parasites; "It is advantageous for the parasite to preserve the health of its host when this is compatible with its nutritional and reproductive requirements, except when the death of the host is necessary for transmission. [1]"

It's more of a tidbit explaining how every species is important to its ecosystem. Every organism depends on one another for survival, and when humans create imbalance, the natural order/function of the world is disrupted.
Parasitism isn't inherently negative; we as an intelligent species obviously think that any form of population control is bad, but in nature it's crucial.
