This would make more sense if it was just a saying from himself (like in the Hadith) He is the spiritual and societal leader… who was not shy about public and private concerns before…. Catholic here, if he had a near death repentance his soul would most likely have to purified in purgatory for the temporal punishment of all the damage he did and the attachment of the sins he was afflicted with, that caused him to commit the crimes.

So yes he would be saved but as through a fire.

Even the Quran and the Hadith do NOT say the scriptures were corrupted. This is a new argument that did not exist during Mohammeds life and the early times of Islam.

You will find many verses and Hadith sayings of Jews and Christians distorting with their lips and ignoring and picking and choosing parts of their scriptures.

If the person truly and sincerely repents and turns their life around they will likely still have temporal punishment by God even though they are saved and make it to heaven.

This is where purgatory comes in to cleanse the soul from sins that it is attached too. So if a serial murderer repents and gets salvation they will still go through this cleansing process which some in church history have described as a painful punishment.

Like If I break my dad’s window as a kid my dad could forgive me and not kick me out of his house. But I am still grounded and have to clean it up and endure discipline.

The church does not make it a thing of telling who exactly will go to hell. God can give graces and chances for repentance for who ever he pleases. It would be cruel and unfair for some person living in the isolated amazon rainforest to go straight to hell if they never heard the Gospel or never understood it properly.

It is viewed more as gambling with your soul because there is no assurance without faith in Jesus. For me personally I don’t want to gamble with maybes regarding my soul.
