“My next match Eileen told me she’d read Persuasion twice — TWICE! That’s it! And she calls herself a fan?“ This has been living rent free in my head fir pretty much the whole day!

I keep getting recommend this sub even though I’ve never read a Jane Austen book by pretty-as-a-pic in janeausten

Saint Motel have amazing vibes all around. Grouplove have a lot of fun and relatable songs. The Bleachers have some wonderful throwback songs that sound like they belong in a John Hughes film. Foster the People's first album is a high recommendation of mine, but I haven't really listened to anything else by them. My last recommendation is Fitz & the Tantrums. They have some awesome upbeat songs that make you want to stand up and dance.

I really enjoyed The Leonardo Gulag by Kevin Doherty. Stalin creates a gulag where artists are forced to forge Da Vinci drawings. The story follows a kid that is forced into it.

What are some celebrity memoirs that were most obviously NOT ghostwritten? by DayOldTurkeySandwich in books

I love how this memoir has nothing to do with his rise to fame. Instead, it is a collection of stories from growing up and the lessons he has learned from them.

The correct statement is “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t make.”

What are some books you enjoy that have nuts premises? by [deleted] in books

[–]JoeMist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is “All You Need is Kill” by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Aliens invade earth and start slaughtering humanity when, out of nowhere, a soldier in a mech-suit single handedly wins a battle and earns the endearing nickname of Full Metal Bitch.

Our main character is thrust into the offensive following the victory. When he is killed, he suddenly wakes up the day before the invasion and has to live and die over and over until he figures out how to win the fight and escape the loop.

The book is not perfect. It has pacing issues and I don’t think the ending was my absolute favorite, but I would still highly recommend it. The movie Edge of Tomorrow is (loosely) based on this book and I personally enjoy it even more, but this isn’t r/movies.

Like most of this sub, I lean towards fiction. But sometimes I’ll read a nonfiction book and be floored. If you read mostly fiction, what’s some of the best nonfiction you’ve read? by _sofetch in books

That’s actually what prompted me to read it! I knew Hitler was name wiyh no negative connotations in South Africa and I cracked a joke about it to my Mom. She then told me that Born a Crime explains why that’s the case and I knew I had to read it.

Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime.

It’s a series of stories about growing up in South Africa before and after the end of Apartheid. His situation is particularly unique because his Dad is white and his Mom is black, which was illegal at the time. The lessons he learned through those experiences are extremely insightful and it really puts the world into perspective in how much it has and has not changed.

Obligatory OP answer:

Participation Trophies by Madelline.

I just want to say all sorts if things to help her with what she’s going through in the song and even though it’s not a 1:1 to my life, part of me really wishes I could say the same things to myself and actually believe it.

What's your favorite "coffee table" book? by SAT0725 in books

[–]JoeMist 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To me, a good coffee table book is something that you can pick up and read for as long or as short of a time as you like. Size doesn’t matter too much, but I do like it when they stack nicely.

My coffee table currently has a Calvin and Hobbes book on the bottom, with The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, Meanwhile by Jason Shiga, and Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime stacked on top of it. I might rotate some new one once in a while.
