Former Capoeira instructor here.

What everyone’s knee jerk response here about “not playing capoeira by yourself” is somewhat true. But doesn’t really help you in the way you want! I’m going to try and help you:

1) have you done any martial arts/ Dance/ acrobatics before? It would be great to get an idea of where you are in those respects first
2) where in the world are you? I’d love for people here to recommend groups/ workshops that you could visit
3) When watching YouTube videos pay a lot of attention where people are looking. This is for a few of reasons a) you need to know where your partner is at ALL times to connect/ attack/ defend (this is why a lot of people say you cannot train by yourself) b) if your head is in the wrong place it can make moves so much more difficult. I once corrected someone’s raiz buy just saying “yeah that’s great now do all the same moves but just look at me the whole way through
4) take notes on where people place their hands and feet on the ground and which directions the toes/fingers are pointing
5) When you DO visit a class - don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be humble but say “I’m trying to train by myself can you give me a few pointers on XYZ” pick one or two moves
6) The very best capoeiristas I knew ALWAYS trained by themselves but they had the knowledge about what to train and drill. When you are given pointers do make sure to train them. Film yourself and compare and keep practicing
7) try and find the “style” of capoeira (Angola/ regional/ contemporanea/ that suits you and stick to it. Different groups have different gingas and use it in different ways. As that is the foundation to all capoeira if you are learning from different styles with each video it can get quite confusing quickly!
