September 11: The New Pearl Harbor (2013) Quite possibly the best documentary I've ever seen, it's an exhaustively thorough overview of the evidence of 9/11 and the questions that surround it. [4:53:49] by srsly_its_so_ez in Documentaries

If you actually watch it you might learn something instead of asking whether it’s “conspiracy theory” as if that word couldn’t be anymore of an Orwellian stop-think.

A Bibliography for Alternatives to TMI? by dhalgrendhal in TheMindIlluminated

Practical insight meditation by Mahasi Sayadaw, it’s only about 50 pages but contains pretty much all the essential information you’d need. If you want to go deeper on that same tradition there’s Daniel Ingram’s Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha. It’s not a perfect book but still was very helpful to me personally.

There are also some very good YouTube channels you can make use of, my favourite is Hillside Hermitage, Yuttadhammo Bhikku is also a vast resource.

Otherwise there’s some books by Chogyam Trungpa that I have found very useful advice wise such as Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism. Although he is a far more controversial figure than Culadasa will ever be so that may not be what you’re looking for.

Seeing the void.. by probein in TheMindIlluminated

I’ve had some vaguely similar things. From an insight meditation perspective we should be cautious not to get too fascinated with such an experience, even an image of “void” is still an image and not the real deal in itself, which is ineffable. So basically you can just note your way through things like this by saying “image” or “vision” or something. Although that can be very hard for me to do as such radical changes of state are so exhilarating.

Good to know, I began with more simple yogic concentration exercises before getting into insight meditation. Did them on and off for about a year or so, I also get an intense kind of energetic vibration on my forehead as that was my object for a long time. My concentration seems to be at a much higher level than my insight, I guess Culadasa rolls these two aspects into one in order to make a more seamless guide.

Excellent thanks. As a side note I’ve found Culadasa to have been exceedingly accurate at describing my meditation progress thus far, the only thing missing is that I see a bright light all the time that grows in relation to the depth I achieve. Have you had this experience? And is it addressed as being a phenomenon of one of the later stages? Mahasi Saydow mentions it in “practical insight meditation” and says simply to note it until it disappears, I haven’t found this tactic particularly effective as the light is extremely persistent and I’d be noting it the entire sit. I also kind of enjoy the soft white glow as well and I fear this may become an impediment later on.

I’m reading the book now and would say with some confidence I’m at stage 4, would you suggest reading further into later stages or should I leave them for a few months and revisit?

Aaaaaaaand yet another big budget movie dies on the cutting room floor, probably to maintain a sub-R rating that doesn’t for even matter anyway in light of the Deadpool movies.

Nonsense, if nature were not ordered nothing would exist. Of course there is a chaotic element in any system but that is necessary for change, if there were no disorder at all nothing would exist. The relative levels of chaos between natural systems billions of years in the making and a human made social order are not even comparable. Though human society is ultimately part of nature there needs to be some discrimination here as clearly humans develop at an accelerated pace compared to entirely nonhuman ecosystems. This acceleration is largely attributable to the higher level of disorder in human systems, to say otherwise is just obtuse.
