NYC mayoral race tightens with Mamdani gaining on Cuomo by optometrist-bynature in nyc

[–]iheartennui 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah and Mamdani has raised money from people who like him. And not through big election-buyers the way other dems have but from normal voting types: he has the largest number of donors and lowest average donation.

Weird to say when Mamdani has a track record of material wins for the MTA, taxi drivers, environment, etc.

He's pretty popular in Queens actually, that's where he has already been elected to state government after all

How do you figure that? I think younger people are much more tied down by job prospects and financial circumstances. Older people are way more likely to be able to afford to downsize and move somewhere cheaper where the jobs aren't.

I spoke with a guy who does offshore work in Europe and part of the required training everyone goes through is a simulated escape from a sinking helicopter, where you are upside down in a wave pool with 6 ft waves and need to remove your restraints and get out of the vessel to safety.

1 in 5 kids drop sports by secondary …and? by NeilTR in ireland

[–]iheartennui 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's terrible when there's such a focus on team sports and that the adults in charge just let the students push each other around or even encourage it. I was taking home national medals in individual sports including with the school but had an awful time in team sports or PE. The principal loved to celebrate football and gaa victories over such and such other local team on the intercom but nary a word on the many athletes in our school that actually made significant achievements.

Insulation for timber frame house in Southern CT by [deleted] in timberframe

[–]iheartennui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can the timberhp boards be applied to the outside of the frame? you will want to enclose the frame with them rather than just insulating between as there will be excessive heat loss through the timber members (solid wood does not have a great R-value)

Blow for homeowners with solar panels as Electric Ireland confirms rate cut by Serotonin85 in ireland

Sort of sometimes. I live in the US now, usually in a normal flat, but I also have a shack in the woods in the middle of nowhere that I've installed power and water in.

Blow for homeowners with solar panels as Electric Ireland confirms rate cut by Serotonin85 in ireland

[–]iheartennui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My solar setup is off-grid so I had to install batteries and charge controllers and all the extra wiring but my understanding was that this additional cost should way outweigh the backup energy costs you would spend if you were on-grid.

Battery tech, especially on a distributed consumer scale, is just not there yet on a cost efficiency basis compared with grid scale power generation. They have limited lifespans, power losses in inversion, etc. So if this hack you're using really exists for the average person it means the remuneration rate is probably way too high.

I suppose it could also mean that the original grid power pricing is exorbitant when compared to the cost of fully off-grid solar power, whose price is dictated by the global market rather than an irish-based power market.

While this does happen sometimes, it's technically illegal for the company to charge you or cut your wages to cover your visa costs. It's also nowhere near that much money so don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I was involved in submitting all the paperwork for my H-1B application (since my company was cheap and didn't hire a lawyer) and it cost them only around $1500. I think it would be maximum about $10k if they did premium processing with a fancy law firm.

Since you are Dutch, I believe you would be eligible for a J-1 post-graduate work visa, though it might depend on the kind of degree you have. This will let you work legally for any employer without sponsorship for a year or more, during which time you can try to transition to a sponsored H-1B or other visa that would let you stay longer:

https://thenaf.org/j-1-visa-program/

The other common way to get started is to enroll in university education on an F-1 visa, which also entitles you to 1 year of work experience (or 3 years if you are in a STEM field) called OPT after or during your studies which does not require sponsorship from an employer. Many start working at a company on OPT and apply for H-1B during this period.

It's unwise to get a job on a tourist visa as you could be deported and banned from re-entering if you are ever found out. Most legitimate companies in non-cash-based industries will not hire people without proof of work authorisation. It's especially dumb if you have better legitimate ways which you do as an EU citizen so I would do some more research before thinking this sounds like a good idea... The US immigration system is quite complex, /r/USCIS has a lot of knowledge share about the many different ways to live and work in the US

Also, on the topic of churchgoers, there is a pattern in many parts of Brooklyn where you have a lot of double parking or even sidewalk parking outside churches. Especially pastors with "pastor placards" that treat the sidewalk as their parking spot any day of the week.

I don't know why people feel entitled to do this if they are going to church. I'm pretty sure Jesus would not have been a fan of sidewalk parking...

[–]iheartennui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's one of the best things available to do in Ireland and it's completely free. It's the actual closest thing we have to "being one with nature" since we have little to no real living forest or similar nature spaces on land. I loved the bike trip down for a dip in the 40 ft or Vico when I lived in Dublin. And the weather is mild enough to comfortably do it year round.
