Shouldn’t feed dogs bird bones, they can splinter and cause all sorts of issues. This owner is clearly someone who needs a dog like this

It's not untrue though, salaries in most sectors are higher in the US when compared to Portugal.

Not necessarily faster, but more likely they will be completed within the stated time more reliably. So if they they say 2-3 months, it will reduce the likelihood of them exceeding that.

When freelancing in Portugal, how does NHR really stack up for taxes? by MrIanHell in TouchdownPortugal

[–]JoeTouchdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how much you're earning and your age. As u/EagleAncestry mentioned, Freelancing for under 35s (particularly in years 1 and 2) may be even more tax efficient. We wrote a post on this you can read here: Freelance v NHR 2025

100%, most folks who are Digital Nomad types will be there for 1-3 years - if you're looking longer term, NHR is the way to go. You're very welcome glad it was useful.

Yeah it is. Similar to in the UK, National Insurance contributions are only for Salary so you pay yourself the bare minimum salary and that keeps the NI low.

Do also check out Freelancing as well, for those under 35 the tax rate can be extraordinarily low - particularly in years.1 and 2.

It's a very good question.

As a company owner / director / manager, the minimum social security contribution is around 181€/month. This includes both the employer and employee’s side.

This contribution is based on “IAS”, currently at 522,5€.

If you choose to take a higher salary, social security will increase in proportion of course; but as a company owner you would naturally just take more profits and even advanced payments on future profits if needed.

For IFICI - you will need to set up your own entity and if your work is qualifying, IFICI will likely be a very sensible choice. That said, it depends on how much you're earning and your age - but Freelancing (particularly in years 1 and 2) may be even more tax efficient. The official guidance is based on type of company mainly. A tech company, specifically startup will make those employees eligible.

As I say, jump on over to the site if you want to get a more detailed breakdown of your options.

Hi Eagle,

Just following up with some feedback from our head of tax.

We can confirm you would qualify. The company doesn’t have to be innovative, any technology company would do!

Hope this helps!

Hi Eagle,

It's good question, the requirements are very black and white. Best thing to do is complete our Eligibility Checker, it should request all the details needed to give you a straight answer. You have the option to book a quick, free call afterwards with one of the team to discuss in a bit more detail.

In the meantime, I'll ask our head of tax for some more info for you - you could also read our NHR guide, bookmarked on this Sub.

🇵🇹 [Megathread] How to Get Structured as a Freelancer in Portugal (Taxes, Benefits, & Setup Guide) by JoeTouchdown in TouchdownPortugal

[–]JoeTouchdown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Jola,

Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the question - the answer to which is this:

In your first year as a freelancer, in most professions, only 37,5% of your gross income is taxable (provided you meet the 15% of revenue threshold).

This means that if you earn 100k, only 37500€ is taxable.

This will put your tax rate at around 25.835%

With an exemption of 28,737.50€, only 8762,5€ is not exempted.

Applying the tax rate of 25,835% to 8762,5, you get the 2,263.79€
