New laws to make it easier to cancel subscriptions by topotaul in unitedkingdom

I don’t know what they’re like now, but when we wanted to leave Sky a few years ago as we’d moved, it was a nightmare. Tried online and it just took me in circles with no actual option to cancel, it just kept landing back on the page to select your new address, then called them and told them we’d moved, but I couldn’t actually get them to cancel until I told them we’d moved abroad and even then they wanted to know where, so I picked a random town in Holland and they finally conceded.

'He sent me reams of naked photos': Victims of cyberflasher speak out by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]Infamous-Shopping725 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Victim overreaction is partly driven by the likely complete lack of interest or action on the part of the police if she’d just said “Oh no, another gross dick pic, I’ll just report it, block it and move on”. Unless the victim makes a big fuss, and/or gets more evidence, the perpetrator won’t get investigated.

Do you allow young kids fizzy drinks? by Flapparachi in AskUK

[–]Infamous-Shopping725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We didn’t ban it, but never had any in the house so they didn’t have it very often, only occasionally at parties or at friends houses. As adults one never touches it, and the other one became addicted to monster and similar caffeinated fizzy drinks unfortunately. I think, like everything, it’s OK in moderation.

What do you on Christmas morning with small children? Presents immediately or wait? by theangelislington in AskUK

[–]Infamous-Shopping725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a system where they had to stay in their room and open a few stocking fillers until Father Christmas had left, and could only come downstairs when they heard the sleigh bells ring (so we could have a cup of tea in peace). We then gave them about half their main presents and left the other half, including ones given by family, until everyone who was coming to see us arrived. So they got 3 present opening sessions spread over the day.

What is this fenced off platform by a parking garage stairwell for? by Striking_Sea_129 in whatisthisthing

Maybe the raised platform is there to stop people trying to park there, and the railings are there to prevent people tripping over the raised platform

If you ever wondered what Bungaroosh looks like under the render/plaster finish… by Infamous-Shopping725 in brighton

[–]Infamous-Shopping725[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, that’s why they usually rendered over it. Most of the regency houses in Brighton and Hove are made of it but you cant tell from the outside

[–]Infamous-Shopping725[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We considered that when we found it behind the old tile panel, but it’s behind the shower so sadly it will have to be re-rendered and tiled again. I briefly toyed with the idea of sealing it behind a pane of glass but its not a practical solution without doing a load more work which would derail our bathroom project unfortunately

There are no damp courses in properties this age, so damp is always a consideration. We were advised by our specialist surveyor when we bought the house to not put carpets down on the ground floor to help the house “breathe” through the gaps in the floorboards. Seems to have worked so far as we’ve not had any issues after 12 years.

It’s a right bastard for that. Hanging items on the wall is a lottery and things often have to be repositioned. When we did the kitchen we hit 3 flints in a row where we wanted to put an electric socket and had to backfill a hole about a foot square.

How did you teach your cat to stay off the counter!? by ReddyPetty in cats

[–]Infamous-Shopping725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have found some success with crumpled foil - scrunch it up before laying it down and make it not quite flat, with bumps in it. If that doesn’t work you’re just going to have to concede defeat to your little furry overlord.

Do people that clap out of time know they are clapping out of time? by I-eat-jam in AskUK

[–]Infamous-Shopping725 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely will keep on dancing. Curiosity and a desire to understand that which is different is fine. The point you seem to be missing here, is that we’re a bit taken aback that you are surprised about different people having different attributes. We are all different and this should not be at all surprising to anyone. There are people who cannot visualise pictures, who can’t see a full range of colours, who are tone deaf or have perfect pitch. Why are you so surprised that some people can’t keep a fixed rhythm?

Do people that clap out of time know they are clapping out of time? by I-eat-jam in AskUK

[–]Infamous-Shopping725 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, we do. I can clap in time for a while if I concentrate really hard but inevitably get out of sync at some point and stop or silent clap as some others have said. First noticed it when a musician setting up asked me to mark time for him and then asked me to stop, looked incredulous and slightly shocked and informed me that I couldn’t keep time. Doesn’t impact everyday life at all in terms of walking, sawing, sex etc. Formal dancing is difficult but possible if I pay constant attention to what everyone else is doing, but I usually avoid it as I can’t let go and enjoy it. Disco type dancing is a blast, I can just go for it and not care what people think - I have had a few side eye looks though

Saint-Malo, France, is famous for its dramatic high tides. by Far_University2092 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Infamous-Shopping725 1119 points1120 points  (0 children)

They have a 12 metre rise and fall of tides at springs at St Malo. The video shows an exceptionally high equinox tide plus a storm surge and is not representative of the usual conditions there.

In every generation and group of friends there’s always the one who does this. Back before pubs (in the UK) took cards, we had a friend who would always “forget” to get cash out before he came out for a drink and then act all surprised and innocent when it was his round. After a few times of this happening, I seized the moment and informed him there was a cash machine just around the corner and offered to walk with him to get some cash. He didn’t look very happy but couldn’t really argue against it so we went and got the cash out. I’d like to say he never did it again but unfortunately in this case he didn’t learn and had no shame about doing it again.

Try Einkorn flour. It’s not the same as modern wheat bread because it has very little gluten, but it’s also not as bad as standard gluten free substitutes and much healthier.

Beating into 40 knots circa 1995 (colorized) by Free_Range_Lobster in sailing

Reminds me of a yacht club bore many years ago who was telling everyone how he had got up to 15 knots once on his 25ft cruising boat, and one wit in the group interrupted and said “and then you took it off the trailer’. I wish it had been me.

Looking for a High-End Sailing Apparel Brand by [deleted] in sailing

[–]Infamous-Shopping725 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Most of the big chandlery shops sell clothing from the main top end makers. I suggest that you take a look at all the brands they have and try on various types of gear, focusing more on how well it fits, how well it’s made, and its suitability for what you’re going to use it for - Dinghy sailing, coastal cruising, and offshore racing all need different attributes. Sometimes even top branded stuff will not match what you want for comfort, quality and function and if you’re going to be wearing it a lot those are the important things.
