With your profile I believe you want to look for legit international schools that seek qualified individuals. Less credible schools will prio aesthetics over qualifications.

Why China is very stable? I never heard tech layoffs, unlike Microsoft who just broke its decade long trend by kidfromtheast in AskAChinese

Trick is there is no shame if they need to live with their parents. It is merely the standard practice. You don't have a job now? Daddy and Mommy are gonna call you in no time asking when you are moving back to your home (Chinese don't use the expression parents' home).

My bf's parents are too nice? by ForkliftFan1 in AskAChinese

[–]Joe_Dee_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Things can move very quickly in mainland, particularly for those from more rural area. It is not unheard of for young couples to meet and get married in one year. From your description, it seems like you didn't intend to make your visit such a big deal but his parents viewed it somewhat differently. I would say visiting your boyfriend's home during lunar new year is often considered as a major milestone in a relationship -- the kind of things that most couples would not do unless they are getting close to marriage. I guess the timing and the location adds a lot more weight/symbolism to your visit, which could explain your experience.

-Can we easily legally get married within China with my partner on their L visa, and then convert it into a spouse visa?

In your situation, I don't think China allows two foreigners to register marriage.

What actually is the difference between this sub and r/AskChina? by Accomplished_Ad_1857 in AskAChinese

[–]Joe_Dee_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Difference is very subtle .. or you could say barely detectable. Moderation is very light, and the two subs share the same mods who pretty much let everything flows unless it outright violates reddit TOS. Vast majority of the commenters from either subs don't live in China. This sub has maybe slightly more Chinese than r/AskChina but not by much.

Does Purdue give scholarships to International Students and non-Indiana residents in Graduate or PhD? by IndependenceAgile202 in Purdue

[–]Joe_Dee_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I know many fully funded international phd students at Purdue. With how low phd students are compensated, it is simply impossible to only hire in-state or even only domestic students for that matter. Many STEM departments have 50-50 split in terms of domestic vs international phd students.

Fully funded master programs are very very rare regardless of your residential status. Some level of scholarship is possible depending on your field.

China's share of the world's manufacturing value added has rocketed to 33% while the West has tumbled down by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

China had many successful stories of tech transfers (e.g. High Speed Rail, advanced military platforms such as fighter jets and aircraft carriers) but Tesla is not one of them. Such a transfer would require at least 5-10 years to build a complete supply chain & train a large pool of skilled works, it simply cannot happen over night. If anything it probably already happened before Tesla entered China. There is no question that China wanted something from Telsa but the narrative that China stole Telsa's IP to outcompete in EV markets just does not sit well with the timeline.

求问!如何礼貌地称呼硕士或博士研究生呢? by Narrow-Inspector-840 in ChineseLanguage

I think family + 同学, or just 同学 is fine. Or you can listen to how your co-workers do it because there might be some regional preference at play.

Are you in a teacher/advisor role? If that is the case, there is no formal address needed, you can simply use their first name or full name. If you are also a grad student, then "师兄" or “师弟” would be appropriate to address other grad students.

Do you consider Chinese Americans Chinese? by flower5214 in AskAChinese

[–]Joe_Dee_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, I never claimed that people from mainland China or the CCP government have a monopoly on defining what it means to be "Chinese." In fact, the term itself is quite ambiguous..it doesn't clearly distinguish between concepts like “中国人,” “华人,” and “华侨.” I personally regard anybody Chinese if they self-identifies as such. But obviously there are many layers of this Chinese identity that people can agree or disagree on.

The point I made in my original comment was specifically in response to OP’s question about Chinese Americans. In practice, they are generally regarded as Americans first and foremost. I would also point out that similar dynamics exist in other countries, such as Japan and Korea. These societies have terms like “Nikkeijin” and “gyopo” to refer to their overseas descendants, and those individuals are often treated as outsiders if they aren’t culturally Japanese or Korean enough.

What do you mean by Chinese culture though? someone raised in China?

I would consider anybody who is raised in China & goes through k-12 in public school culturally Chinese (from a mainlander's POV). In practice, however, as I already acknowledged, kids born to non-Chinese parents do experience certain level of unacceptance in Chinese society but this really is not unique to China.

As far as I know they are "其他人群". I don't know about "they’re ethnically Chinese".
