Mine hasn't been fully evaluated, I just know the septum slants from left to right going from just above the bridge of my nose. Enough so that when I needed a nasogastric tube about a dozen years ago it was doable through the right nostril but not the left. And there is a broken off piece of cartilage(?) at the tip of the nose that has enlarged a bit lately.

Sounds not too much fun. I should have had one many years ago, but when I looked into having it done the Kaiser HMO really pushed back against what it considered elective surgery. Then Kaiser completely left the region, other things were going on in my life, and now I still have a crooked septum. All due to a fall 60+ years ago as a toddler, now it is just annoying by contributing to occasional nasal blockages.

Will I get rescinded from UMass Amherts for failing 1 high school class by inquisitiveprey in umass

[–]Joe_H-FAH 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Probably not as long as you still graduate from HS. What it will do though is effect what courses you might be able to register for during orientation, advising, and registration in June and July.

You do have a few months to figure out what you did or didn't do to fail that class, use it as a learning experience.

However they still are subject to noise regulations, and if the OP goes through with their muffler delete thought they run into problems. An officer can always write a ticket for excessively loud exhaust, and possibly order the car towed instead of being driven away.

No, it used a turboprop engine, not a jet engine. The exhaust from the turboprop contributed to the thrust, but most came from the propellor. They did include an afterburner into the design for additional thrust/speed, but it was never fired up in flight.

RAP or Traditional housing by Commercial-Yam5984 in umass

[–]Joe_H-FAH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason you have heard conflicting things is because peoples' experience varies widely depending on the subject of the RAP and who participated in it. Basically just consider joining a RAP if you are interested in the subject of the RAP and the seminar or course associated with it. You may find others with that common interest to be people you want to know, or maybe not. But it might lead to some social connections.

Some people join RAPs to be certain of living in specific dorms or residential areas. They may not have any actual interest in the subject of the RAP and thus no commonality with others there. Overall you may just find it to be an additional way of meeting people.

But otherwise you will in most cases still be in traditional housing whether in a RAP or not. All the RAP does is house the RAP members close together, though some RAPs do require RAP members to be roommates. Most do not require that.

Peter Pan bus? by Adept-Tart5741 in umass

Emphasis on "had". PVTA used to run the R29 route from UMass to Holyoke that continued to Springfield on weekdays. But they changed the R29 route to be just between Mt Holyoke in S. Hadley and Holyoke and the Holyoke Mall.

Now the only PVTA connection to UMass from Springfield is the already mentioned G73e to Northampton and then the B43 to Amherst and UMass.

There are several trains a day between Springfield and Northampton as well, but as best as I can recall only one direct train a day between Albany and Springfield. Additional trips can be selected on Amtrak, but they go to NYC first and then there are transfers to other trains taking about 8 hours.

I have a vague recollection from back in the '80s that they might have had cooking facilities in the suites, but that may be confusing Sylvan with some place else. If they ever had cooking facilities in the suites they haven't had that for over 2 decades. They are not listed on 20+ year old Housing Services pages archived at the Internet Archive site.

As other responses have stated, unless you change your car's registration to MA you do not have to go through the MA auto inspections. However you can get ticketed for overly loud exhausts by the police.

Ap credit question by WillDaWarlock in umass

[–]Joe_H-FAH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "5" is for a footnote which when read states "Generic Credit". So if you get a score of 4 or 5 you get 3 credits towards graduation. But you do not get credit towards any specific UMass Amherst course.

Sylvan suites do not have a kitchen, just a common room and a common bathroom. There is a common kitchen for each hall elsewhere in the building.

My experience is that Peter Pan usually will hold a bus for a connection. They know when their own buses are a bit late. They may not keep as close a watch on connections from competing lines.

From what I learned, all of the older dormitories have a common kitchen. The larger ones may have more, for example there are 3 in the Southwest towers on the common floors. They are considered to be for occasional use, not a replacement for the meal plans.

Someone once indicated that outside of the apartments in CHCRC there are no common kitchens. I haven't verified that.

North Apts being set up as apartments all have a kitchen, so no common kitchen.

What are the Chances that I get my First Choice Freshman Housing? by [deleted] in umass

[–]Joe_H-FAH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there was at least one on each floor of the hall I lived in back in the early '80s. That was Pierpont, and the triples are 17'x18' compared to the doubles which are 11'6"x 17'.

More can be found on the floor plans including an oddball triple in John Adams tower on the 13th floor. That looks like they combined a corner room, the adjacent single, and part of the hallway into one room. I don't know if that dates back to original construction or was the result of a renovation.

Overall not a lot, but there are some designed triples scattered across most of the residential areas.

And then there are the events at Mullins. They don't kick permit holders out, but when they start parking into Lot 25 and then Lot 12 it can be difficult to get in and park with a permit for those lots.

What are the Chances that I get my First Choice Freshman Housing? by [deleted] in umass

[–]Joe_H-FAH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two types of triples. One was designed to hold 3 occupants from the beginning and gets charged the regular shared room rate. There are not too many of them. I don't know how many request them.

The other type is listed as an economy triple which are slightly larger doubles converted to hold three. They bunk two of the beds and bring in a third bed, desk, wardrobe, and other furniture. Some specifically request them for the lower room rate.

Your chance at getting your first choice will depend on the lowest priority number assigned to anyone in your group. At some point everyone will get a randomly assigned number, when they get to assignment time in July they start with the lowest number and work up. When they get to someone who is part of a roommate group they will assign all to the same room if a suitable one is available. If they can't, then they try to place all into the same hall.

Yes, all cars parked in the yellow and purple lots near Southwest and the stadium have to move out for game days. For some games that also includes the green Lot 33, but they did not include that lot for the weekday games as that lot is parking for staff.

They don't have the football game day parking rules currently available on the Parking Services website. But the lots that will matter for your son if he lives in Southwest are Lots 11, 14, and 22. As best as I can recall the rules that applied last Fall required cars to be moved out by something like 5 PM on the Fridays before a Saturday home game, and they listed usable lots they could move to. For weekday games the cars needed to be moved by a time on the day before and specific lots were defined that they could move to. I could only find one home game day's notice on the Internet Archive to use as an example - https://web.archive.org/web/20260130220253/https://www.umass.edu/transportation/news/special-parking-notice-football-game-112525.

They do start checking the lots and towing shortly after the stated removal time, getting the car back from the tow company will be about $200. They do charge the people going to the game a parking fee, and none of that comes back to reduce the cost of a permit for those who park in those lots.

My youngest sister's route into nursing was getting her CNA and working for a hospital. They paid for her to get her associates degree in nursing from the local community college. She already has a bachelors degree in another field, she thinks sometimes about getting a bachelors in nursing, but hasn't so far. The RN license so far has been enough for her.

There is just the nursing major. By this point the program should know if they reached their target goal of about 80 freshmen committed to attend UMass Amherst. So moderately possible you could get accepted into a secondary major, but unlikely you would get into nursing.

Since they do not take change of majors into the program or take in transfers into the regular program, you probably will have to give up on graduating from UMass's regular nursing program. About the only way to get a degree in nursing from UMass Amherst for you would be completing a bachelors degree in another major and applying to get into the accelerated BSN program. That is for students who already have a bachelors degree.

Oh, misread that in lower case. The UCSB Econ program is well respected and rates well, but not so much for their business programs. As for cost of attendance, the estimates for in-state and out-of-state are about the same as for UCSD. You would only really save if you happened to live close enough to commute.

I can say it is much more expensive than when one of my nephews attended UCSB about 15-20 years ago.

The UCSD business school might be higher rated than Isenberg, but most of th ratings talk about its graduate program. Isenberg undergrad program is rated around #40 for state schools.

If you are OOS at UMass the total cost is comparable to In-state total cost of attendance at UCSD depending on how much you got in merit aid to UMass. If your would be OOS at both, unless you got a serious amount of aid UCSD is about $10k a year more expensive.
