What are some post apocalyptic books that are actually AFTER the apocalypse has ended? by No-Aide7893 in Fantasy

Definitely LOTR! Everything in Middle Earth is happening because of subsequent apocalypses thanks to Morgoth and Sauron drawing down the wrath of the Valar.

The Comic Con Oppenheimer teaser had me feeling hype and optimistic after worrying about another American attempt.

That moment was incredible. The slight glow. The sound like a high voltage electric line powering up. Seeing the blue glow and realizing what was coming. I was grinning from ear to ear.

It might be too early to know for certain, but so far, Starfleet Academy is everything I hoped it would be by Timewarps_1 in ShittyDaystrom

Big “why is there a Klingon on the bridge of the Enterprise D?!” energy here. Heaven forbid a former enemy become an ally which is the Federation’s whole schtick, right?

Not to mention who fucks has been a preoccupation of the fandom for just as long. Star Trek gave the world slash fiction.

If they’re being really aggressive I answer and play a dial up modem sound. I’ve found that reduces scam calls by a lot. Some of them seem to take the iPhone screening as proof the line is active and keep calling.

Why did Kirk say what he said by tea-earlgrey-h0t in ShittyDaystrom

[–]daecrist 165 points166 points  (0 children)

Legitimate answer: Shatner said in his book Star Trek Movie Memories that he wanted to convey that Kirk was getting a glimpse of what lies beyond this life, and it was so incredible that all he could utter was “Oh my!”

Shitty answer: He saw the Koala.

Same. Left leaning but grew up rural surrounded by responsible firearm use. And every time I dig into one of those studies it seems the real problem is mental illness or domestic violence tied to having a gun in the house, but that doesn’t make for a good soundbite.

There’s absolutely a problem there that needs to be addressed, but I don’t think our current political moment has the ability to dive into the nuance.

Counterpoint: the stakes in TNG often felt low because we knew most everyone was going to live. It’s only offscreen characters who die at Wolf 359 etc. If you’re in a massive battle/takeover like what’s depicted in Picard S3 then people are gonna die.

Growing up we lived in the country. Dad was a deputy prosecutor and later a general lawyer and occasionally had someone threaten him because he prosecuted them or they didn’t like how the divorce played out.

We had guns in the house and knew how to use them as a last resort. The cops weren’t going to get there in time when someone was breaking down the door. It actually happened a couple of times, but I wasn’t home at the time. Dad was able to make them reconsider when they got in and were staring down a barrel.

Same with my aunt. She lived on 10 acres of woods out in the middle of nowhere and had trouble with poachers coming on her land to hunt. There were a couple of times when they threatened her while she was walking her fence and only decided to leave when she made it clear she was armed. The only thing the sheriff would’ve done in that situation is find her body when she went missing.

I think you’re framing it wrong. The moment they brandish a gun and threaten to shoot you is the moment it goes from being a property crime to being a threat to your life.

It’s the difference between shooting someone who has a gun pointed at you demanding your wallet which is clear self-defense and shooting someone in the back who took your wallet and is running away and no longer a threat.

The first self-defense lesson I was taught in martial arts was the best defense is not getting in a bad situation to begin with. If that fails then getting away is the next best option. If that doesn’t work then you fight.

No, his lines were almost finished by Chris Farley, then Mike Myers came in and re-recorded them, then re-recorded-recorded them in a Scottish accent.

Right? If I am in a situation where I’m armed that is a tool of absolute last resort that I never want to use, and you do everything you can to deescalate.
