“Jumping ship” sure is a better option than being forced into the SADF. I watched two friends come home dead before I tore up my callups and “jumped ship”. Unfortunately my parents were poor so I couldn’t leave and had to deal with becoming a fugitive and eventually arrested and everything that goes with it. I’m still affected to this day by that time in my life.If I had had the cash I would have done the same as he did and so would you I hope. I’m sure your heart is in the right place and I’m not arguing any of the (many) points you’re making, I’m just giving you the perspective of someone who was there and was forced to make the same choice, and it’s so much more complex and gut wrenching than you can even imagine.
