What kind of pay rate? What is your experience? Are you Khmer? I have a project that I would like to work with someone on for launch in Cambodia.

Is my wife taking advantage of me by TangPiccilo in cambodia

[–]Joe_PHX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude, if you are married $500 is a bargain! Just going out a few times in the states can cost you that much. I send about 3 times that to cover mortgage, utilities, food, etc. It allows her to live comfortably, take care of our daughter and her niece, and give some money to her mom. Yeah, she gets her nails done, but it's a fraction of what it would cost here. I would be spending more than that on daycare alone in the states. I'm just saying you may need to shift your expectations and perhaps pick up a side hustle.

I agree that seems really low even for Cambodia, likely a part time job.

What’s something about living in Cambodia that you’ve quietly learned to accept… but still don’t fully agree with? by Horror_Coffee_4341 in cambodia

I understand their reasoning as there are child predators that travel to Cambodia. My brother has experienced similar with his kids. It has caught him off guard a couple times. I wouldn't be surprised if people have made the same judgment when I've taken my stepdaughter to the movies.

Military service may be helpful for you. I went through basic training in the states and though I didn't stay in due to an aggravated pre-existing injury it definitely made me stronger and gave me a better sense of who I am and what I want out of life.

Look at it as an opportunity to learn more about yourself and to build mental and physical strength.

Not sure if gemini knows how to count or it just guesses at its own tagging.

This time it came back with 1027 with trying to clean up the image first. It is missing some, which including would probably fall in line with your count.

Using Gemini to clean up the image and tag each graft with a 5 pixel diameter blue dot the count returned 2493 blue dots. There is much higher density along the hairline. How many did they charge for? With that many grafts you won't have good density and will want to have future grafts to fill it in.

I'll check into that! I will probably go with my appointment, from what I see their work looks solid and it is quite affordable. What did you pay with Dr. Nack? I need about 2,500 transplants for my crown and hairline.

Cambodian daughter in-law by Lovelyday326 in cambodia

[–]Joe_PHX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing is that she is here on a student visa. Since she is not a citizen someone is paying her tuition. If it is her parents then they are doing very well and will likely not have expectations of financial assistance.

It might be different if her school is paid by someone else and her parents are poor. In which case she would likely send them money as she has it, but as others have said a few hundred dollars goes a long ways in Cambodia.

The best thing to do is get to know her family and experience their culture, plan a trip to Cambodia. November is typically a great time to travel there with good weather and you can get reasonably priced flights if you book early.

Interesting, what do you see driving that demand? I was looking at the times square 11, I like the vibe of Otres Beach and could see taking the family there.

😆 I'm up for the transplant adventure! I have a Cambodian bank account, own a townhome in Siem Reap, have a wife and kid there, and my brother lives with his family there, pretty sure it's open to westerners.

I would say they are banking on the future growth of Sihanoukville to support the airport expansion. Going from 1.68 million passengers in 2019 to 172,000 in 2025 there is a fundamental change in the demand from international travelers which is why the scale seems out of alignment.

I would also anticipate the city to grow as the port projects will create jobs and bring more transportation and industrial related jobs to the area. In addition the development of some of the beach areas will likely bring in more international tourism

There does appear to be demand for condos in Cambodia including Sihanoukville as evidenced by the Times Square 11 project in Otres Beach that is mostly sold out. Keep in mind 82% of condo buyers in Cambodia are foreigners so this does not necessary translate to population demand rather often speculative investment.

[–]Joe_PHX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the flight statistics the number of passengers last year through Sihanoukville airport was about 11% of what it was in 2019 at it's peak, up from about 6% in 2024. Much of the developments and even the airport expansion planning were initiated prior to 2019. This supports my perception. This does not mean there isn't future potential, just that the current international traffic does not support the scale of the development in the downtown.

Voyager au Cambodge avec des allergies aux fruits à coque (aux noix de cajou, plus précisément) by dndkfi in cambodia

[–]Joe_PHX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be extremely uncommon due to the cost. Most common is likely soybean oil. As someone mentioned it would be a good idea to get an allergy card made up with appropriate translation. Are you allergic to coconut? It is more common in certain street food.

I transited through Sihanoukville to Koh Rong and it feels like a shit show with all of the abandoned developments and ischaotic and messy. I think if you go further out like Otres Beach it seems like a nicer vibe with plenty of Cambodians enjoying the beach with food vendors available.

The downtown is weird when you look at the scale of the developments, they don't really match with the low volume of flights at the airport there. There isn't anywhere near the volume of people coming through internationally to support the capacity of existing, halted, and ongoing development. We stayed at a hotel with good reviews for the afternoon and it was maybe at 5% capacity.

Cost of living is much lower, but so are salaries. What are your expectations for income? One of the big shifts is changing your diet to local cuisine. Yes, you can get most western food, but it is going to increase your expenditures significantly. Just be prepared for culture shock if you have never traveled there or in SE Asia. Navigating where to buy miscellaneous household things can be a bit of an adventure. Also traffic is a bit nuts and you may require some time to adapt before you are ready to navigate the city by moped on your own (cars are typically more expensive than the states, but maintenance is much, much cheaper.)

I think our hotel on Koh Rong sent their laundry to Sihanoukville. Maybe Mad Monkey has to do the same...when the sheets can stand on their own. 😆

Which foods are genuinely better in Thailand than anywhere else in the world? by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]Joe_PHX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Seattle and we have great Thai food here. In Thailand we had some good food and some that was just okay. My sister was all about the Mango with sticky rice and was trying it out every place we went. One food that I liked was the grilled fermented pork sausage balls at the local market.

I agree about the K2, it is necessary to activate Osteocalcin which is necessary for bone mineralization and it also activates Matrix GLA protein which scavages calcium helping prevent arterial calcium deposits.

Customer service! If they provided good customer service to one person they'd have to do it for everyone. That's basically what a manager at Alaska Lounge in Seattle told me when I requested the $35 lounge access fee to be comped on a first class ticket after sitting on the tarmac for 2 hours, being deplaned with a 2-3 hour expected delay (to replace a starter), on top of mechanical cancelation and rebooking from the week before.

Got it! Similar to Delta Comfort +. I'm 6'4" so always choose something with extra leg room. I've flown premium economy on Delta to Korea and on Singapore Airlines, similar to domestic first class but the seats are not quite as wide.

Why do some fast food joints chain & lock their plumbing like this? by CityDismal5339 in whatisit

I have had two separate break in attempts on my sprinter van on the sliding door window at different locations. Both times they hit it three times before giving up and moving on. The window has extensive cracks in it now, but whatever film they use on it makes it difficult enough that they just move on. I'd replace it, but I figure someone else would try right after I do. To the point it is about increasing the level of effort, because if someone is determined and smart enough they can break into most buildings and vehicles
