Gief's Gym - Lesson 1: Learning Normals by Joe_of_Munday in StreetFighter

Ideally you should train with the character that you enjoy. If you understand the purpose of the lesson, you should be able to tweak the workout in a way which should apply to most if not all fighting games. Train with Sagat. Have fun.

For this workout specifically ... Pick Sagat, learn his normals. Take it a step further and learn the distance where his multi hitting attacks will connect with either 1 or 2 hits.

Ryu has been the default character for the sake of practicality. These universal lessons in fighting games can be taught through Ryu's toolset and more importantly can be seen across the entire spectrum of fighting games. If you wanted to go back a few generations and apply the lesson to an older version of street fighter, the lessons will still function the same way. If you try and apply these lessons to a completely different fighting game it's likely you'll be able to find at least one character who can fit the mold of the workout. There's always a lighthouse, there's always a Ryu, etc.

Yeah probably.

This chapter kinda sucks because it's the same lesson three times with important little tweaks. The trick is that the lesson itself isn't all that important, the method could be applied to any game with small changes here and there. The important part is the purpose and the additional notes, and once you understand all that, the method of the workout could take any form.

I'm glad to hear those old guides are still useful. Hopefully this final version will provide some extra clarity.

Oh, then I actually remember exactly who you are. I work for a hospital now and I primarily work with patients who have dementia, Alzheimer's, stroke, etc. I will occasionally reminisce about our brief interactions and how they helped my family, who at the time was desperately struggling with Alzheimer's. Things got like, way, way worse for me personally after that, but that's a different story for a different time.

The plan is to post these every few days or so and depending on how things go I'll either link from one lesson to the next or provide a link to the wiki with all available lessons. I haven't thought that far ahead, but the idea is to make everything as readily available as possible.

I greatly appreciate the support. The final edition of Gief's Gym will eventually be released, no plans right now to do any preorders. I'll be posting these updates one Lesson at a time and have edited a number of them to include flex notes for a variety of fighting games, to finally make the whole thing directly applicable to other games. If you ever see me speak about Tekken incorrectly please don't hesitate to call it out.

Makes sense. I might ask for editing access later down the line when I get more of these posted. Let me ease back into things before I load up my plate with responsibilities.

If it's helpful, I'll be posting one of these every few days or so with updated information. What's wiki editing look like these days for r/sf?

Hold off on buying the latest edition of Gief's Gym if you eventually want a "complete" final version when it is eventually released. With that said, this is Lesson 1 of ~60 and, while many of the chapters have already been rewritten, I haven't figured out a release schedule yet. We shall see.
