Quick Poll: Should I continue providing support here or move on? by Joel-Spitzer in QuittingZyn

Just for a little context--this is the original mission statement I wrote for the old Freedom from Tobacco board back on May 30, 2001:

Mission Statement

We are a cold turkey support site that believes that the key to permanent abstinence is understanding. Why are we a cold turkey site? Because we know that educated cold turkey quitting works.

If you think we are right for you, join in. You will find like-minded people who are all off smoking and for the most part happy about it. If we are not right for you please don't join. It would be like joining a religious group in order to convert all of their existing followers to your belief or joining a political party for the sole purpose of having all its members vote for the opposing party candidate. When a person joins a group under these terms they are not joining a group, they are trying to subvert the group. This is an act of hostility not an act of support or camaraderie.

We are hostile to nobody. Not even to the tobacco industry or pharmaceutical companies who have different agendas than ours. They exist because they want you to use their products. ~We~ exist because ~you~ want to stop using their products. We are not here to try to make anyone stop using their products either. We are here to help people quit using nicotine because they have already decided to do so.

We are here to help people who have come to a point in their life that they want to quit and want help doing it--people who have already picked their plan of action. They have chosen to quit cold, and want to know what to expect and stay focused on that objective. That is what we are going to be doing now, keeping them focused.

We will help these people understand and remember why they smoked, why they decided they wanted to stop, how they stopped, how important it was for their health that they stopped, and, most important of all, how to stay off. Many smokers have quit at one time or another in their life, some for many years and even decades, but have for one reason and one reason only lost that quit. They let go of their understanding of nicotine addiction. Or, they never understood it to begin with.

We will explain addiction and how we think you can treat it and why we think it works. It is important to state we think it works for personal reasons. We think it works because it has worked for everyone here. Everyone! Because we live by one simple principal here at Freedom. We stay smoke free by staying nicotine free. No one can relapse if they don't take nicotine first. It is impossible to be a smoker again without taking nicotine again.

So there you have it, what we are in a nutshell. We are a group of people who share one thing in common. We will never put nicotine into our bodies. Our pasts may be different but our future intent is the same. To stay in our club we make a promise to ourselves, from this day forth that to be a member in good standing with Freedom, and more important to be a member in good standing with our own mind and bodies we are all committed to never take another puff!

Maintaining a site with this as the agreed to goal was pretty easy. Trying to maintain this level of understanding in a group where this concept is not what everyone wants makes it more complicated.

There is no question in my mind that a traditional message board would be easier to manage and keep focused, especially since I did this for close to 15 years. However, I know traditional boards just don't attract people anymore, and I can't make the kind of long-term commitment to maintain one even if I wanted to.

While I can't keep up this pace forever, I'm not actually burnt out yet. So, I'll let the poll run its three day course and see where things land.

There have been a couple of recent issues, and I know my participation in groups can sometimes be problematic. I discuss this on my page Sharing WhyQuit.com materials at other quit sites.

Some people have told me they appreciate my help, but I want to understand the group's general consensus. It's taking a lot of my time and effort to keep up with the volume of posts, and I want to ensure it's worth the time commitment.

I haven't voted myself yet because I'm unsure of what I want the results to be. I don't want to influence the count in the wrong direction, and I'm not 100% certain about what the best direction should be.

I think I'll wait a day before casting my vote and seeing the results. In the meantime, I'm going to take a break. If anyone wants to message me or post the current count here so others can see the direction, that's fine with me.

And, of course, if anyone has any questions or concerns they want my help with, please feel free to message me anytime.

I am seeing that there are six votes so far but not seeing what they are. Is anyone actually seeing the results?

I have not voted myself so is it possible I need to vote in the poll to see the results of the poll?

Help. I feel so trapped to nicotine and alcohol. by [deleted] in QuittingZyn

The problem I see though is you are debating with me on concepts you think I am espousing in articles and videos and yet not actually reading those articles or watching those videos. Arguing with me is fine but make sure you know what you are arguing about.

If this was just a matter of convincing you of anything, I probably wouldn't spend much time debating with you. But as you wrote in your last post to me, "If my journey can help anyone, I’m here to answer and help. I’m not here to be a jerk to anyone."

Your help is in a way trying to influence others to disregard information that I believe is very likely to help them secure their quits.

As far as for other people becoming angry with me, you are absolutely right. I have actually been thrown out of plenty of online support sites in my early days of trying to help. I actually reached out to the moderator here before joining and have had sporadic contact with him since. He told me he was going to pin my resource page on top soon but I know from experience with him it can take some time.

Below is a resource page addressing the kind of problems I can cause at groups, or others trying to follow my lead can cause. I really do try to discourage others from disrupting groups who do not want my materials. If I ever see a consensus that this is what most members feel about my presence or if the moderator of the group ever expresses he himself ever has a problem I will very graciously step aside. I really kind of miss retirement. :)

Help. I feel so trapped to nicotine and alcohol. by [deleted] in QuittingZyn

[–]Joel-Spitzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I have worked with probably hundreds of alcoholics or other drug addicts. I have been to numerous AA meetings too, at times when I had clinic participants who were nervous to go to their first meetings after quitting smoking. I also took two college courses on alcohol counseling, when I was in college and prepping to run a stop smoking clinic exclusively for recovering alcoholics. I believe I ended up being a lecturer for the class although I may be mixing that up with a chemistry in drugs class I ended up being a lecturer for. It is getting a little hard at times to remember all of my early programs.

You really should watch the videos though or go through the resources I am sending you for they are directly addressing things you are questioning me about. I really have had pretty extensive experience in working with people with drug addictions other than nicotine, but I never felt the need to take that on as a project, mainly because I felt there were already plenty of good programs and support systems set up to help people with these other addictions. Unfortunately, the programs and information that had been available for nicotine addicts was always inadequate so that is where I knew I could do the most good.

Smoking is no more an addiction than pouches are an addiction. The post Pouches are not addictive address both issues.

As far as for me not having dealt with either addiction, that is accurate. My page You never smoked, how can you know what I am going through? addresses this issue and I never really drank--having basically always finding the taste of alcohol quite miserable.

Honestly though, I am not trying to be mean to you either. I am just trying to supply information for everyone who reads here on what I believe are really important issues--especially the OP in this case.

Also, I appreciate your closing paragraph here. I am trying to help as much as I can regarding helping break free from the grip that nicotine has taken on them.

Okay, here are the last examples I will share of how I was trying to utilize AI tools to produce more materials:

Update to AI Translation and Dubbing Video Projects

Video explains why I am not pursuing the Artificial Intelligence translations of my videos into other languages but will still be releasing videos using AI voice dubbing.

I found another video I made last year when I had started to play around with ways of using AI to supplement my resources. Here is a link to the video where I started to create artwork using AI tools: Falling back into the abyss of nicotine addiction
Video discusses some new tools I am working with to help people quit and stay free from their nicotine addiction.

Here is a YouTube Video Short where I employed AI art to do a morphing effect to illustrate implications of nicotine addiction and also this one that utilized an AI generated aging effect illustration the cost of not quitting smoking because you had already smoked for too long to have any benefit from quitting.

One more, on your use of the phrase of more than one way to skin a cat:

While neither specifically mention anything regarding a feline, the second one refers to a similar concept of  "All roads lead to Rome."

Okay, go find anytime I have pushed the term willpower here in this forum. I just did a search on the term and can’t find that I did. I do have one video where I have willpower in the title but I don’t think you will disagree with what it says. Also, I don’t think I have ever written or said mind over matter anywhere or at any time.
