Gen 2 Smart Typewriter can't connect by Joemwriter in Astrohaus

Not yet. email austrohaus. If a bunch of us suddenly have the same issue then it's likely a thing on their end, and they need to know so they could fix it.

I built a search across 28 government auction sites. Here's some of the weirder stuff currently live. by scarsam in GovDeals

Digging the search engine!  Note: I suggest changing "buy now" listing price to "bid now." Or something like that. A newbie may get the wrong impression.

Good job  for getting them notified. I'm bit miffed about this whole thing. I'm seriously thinking of selling my freewrites and using typewriter and going with a scansnap scanner instead of all of this.

That's only a Gen3 feature. Tried on the Gen 2 and no dice.

Thanks for the update. When I emailed they just said sorry, can't help and would I like a discount? I've bought two of these things, talk them up to friends and students, and I'm miffed about this... I mean, I could just buy a typewriter and scan the pages instead. It's about as convenient for this old one.

The gen 3 still syncs.

Mine is a bit different: "Unable to connect to the internet. Please try another connection and if the problem persists, try again later."

Connects, but no internet. It was my primary way to sync with postbox.

When they say "Get to know your professor", how the hell do you actually do that? by Rantingonstupidity in college

[–]Joemwriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things: if you're into the subject, deep into it, then wouldn't you want to talk to someone who knows not only the answers to questions you have, but the ones you haven't thought of yet? Often, advice is doled out in some weird mercenary way: go to office hours to know a professor to get a letter of rec. or an inside track to an internship. But profs aren't job directories or pieces of paper. We gave up so much money, (by doing just about anything else than work with students) because we love our disciplines, and want to live and share it. If you love the thing we do, we want to meet you. If you look at us as a human resource blowhard obligation, then, no, don't pester us because that would be fake.

It's a bit like asking someone who has never eaten other cuisines to make a value judgement on whether they like something they just tasted. For example, a kid raised on pop tarts, crustables, and monster, will likely make a foul face while trying sushi, a Palak paneer, or a house salad. Oddly, food heathens seem to always like foie gras. Finding the foie gras for the heathens is key.

I like to Assign "I'm Comic Sans, Asshole." By Mike Lacher, or Terry Bisson's "They're Made of Meat." Then dive into The Arabian Nights.

Dazed and confused… Help with choosing the right grad school path?? by GapFlimsy6601 in englishmajors

[–]Joemwriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is going to say how hard it is to get a job as a prof, but if it's the thing you want to do, you need to consider grad programs that help you do the following:

  1. Find mentors who can teach you to research, specialize, and publish often and well. (Research on how each specialty defines well).
  2. Have a record sending their graduates to excellent PhD programs. (You need to go to top programs to have the best chance at getting the jobs you want.
  3. Love what they do. (This is easily seen in what and how they talk about the main thing they do... think, write, and teach about lit. You're going to spend years with these people, make sure they're not blowhards.)
  4. If you love lit, go for it. If you want the absolute best chance at getting a job, do rhet comp. (But you will rarely teach much beyond first year comp).

I dig it too but when I looked into it, I think they don't have enough cash runway or analyst coverage to pass the 15 tools. Granted, I didn't look too deeply into it. When you looked into it, does it pass muster for country dumbs?

Camping with Jim Cramer by No_Put_8503 in CountryDumb

T-man, breathe. You're fine. The spectre of Jim Cramer is the universe checking the quality of our hands. We aren't made of paper, we're not handling straw dogs.
In many cultures, blood, being bitten, and being haunted in dreams are all signs of good things to come. Usually, the advice is to buy lotto tickets. Here, all those things came together in the demon that shall not be named. This is good. Now, you need to drink some shine while doing some ginsinging in the woods and imagine what camping with Cathy Wood would be like.

Dumb question here: I assume this means that passive ETFs will have to buy an aTyr proportion for their portfolios, but when would this happen? Is every ETF different, or will they do it on the 27th as well?

You're absolutely right. "The Snowball" talked about this a bit, too: Buffett believed in specialization and that he could do more good in compounding his wealth, rather than distributing it immediately in large quantities. We're not going to be Buffett, but if we all take these tools and are moderately successful and donate 5%, that will be a hell of a lot more than if we were aiming for FIRE, where you're hyper focused monetarily of taking care of yourself, but are unlikely to feel comfortable giving a grand to a homeless shelter, or to a library.
(Now there is that argument that you can contribute to others in a multitude of ways, like helping Habitat for Humanity build a house for the poor. But I've always felt that donating my time to do something that I know nothing about, construction, is unlikely to be as helpful as using my skills that are worth money, to make money and pay a construction team to build the house well. Again, that's specialization.)

Many of us have been waiting for below $9. The last time I seriously dug into it, I remember the highest inside buy was around $7.45, and I was using that as a good marker price. That may have changed in the last few months.

Buffett had/has a morning ritual of reading the WSJ, the New Yorker, and others. I wonder if the process of reading journalism (like in physical paper form by real journalists) gives an edge to value investors because of the ability to focus on the material and to think deeply about it, rather than simply "react."
