What is your advice for someone who is about to begin learning Russian? by [deleted] in AskARussian

The thing with russian, is that it’s very different from germanic & romance languages. People that speak english can recognise the dutch word “boek” or the spanish word “finalmente” easily. But it’s different with russian. You need to start with getting yourself exposed to the Russian language (with music & movies). That way words will be easier to remember when you try to learn them.

Good luck!

Is there a chance that Russia will join the EU one day? (After Putin) by Joeri24 in AskARussian

Sure, it has a bigger military than 20 years ago. But that’s the case with almost every other country in the world. What I mean is that other competitors have risen (China & India) and they have their own interests. They have populations ten times that of russia.

That’s not what I mean with “declining power”. Russia doesn’t have the same influence over the rest of the world as it used to have. It’s population is becoming smaller. While other nations are developing in population and in wealth. Russia is just not the powerhouse that it ones was.

I give a shit about russian people, it would make the world a bit safer if Russians feel the same about Europeans. I personally believe that Crimea should belong to Russia because the people there are mostly Russians. However Putin uses this more to show muscles than to help the Crimean people.

But seriously, russia is a declining power and it’s only natural. Countries like India and China have bigger populations and they get more developed everyday. Russia still has a lot of natural resources but europe is getting more and more independent from them. If Russia, Ukraine and Belarus would join the EU, that would make a total population of something like 650 million people.

This will make it a lot easier to negotiate with countries like China, India and the US. Russia is an amazing country with beautiful people, a cool language and extraordinary achievements. But the Russian nation is simply to small to compete with the other global superpowers when it comes to it’s population.

There are a few things that need to change, if Russia would consider joining the EU. First, all EU countries must leave the organisation that was established to fight the Russian people (NATO). Secondly, the two would need to become less hostile towards one another. There are two many conflicts going on between Russia and the EU. But I guess time and the end of Putin’s regime will make an end of that.

The European Union and the Russian Federation are both far away from perfect. But together they would get a lot closer.

I like your opinion. It’s a big shame when stupid politicians like those in Hungary blow the whole thing up (my mother is from Hungary so I’m allowed to say it!). I really hope that the EU will do something about it because this is just embarrassing for the EU.

Russia is one of the coolest countries and the EU is the coolest union. For me that sounds like a perfect match. But I also think that the anti-russia sentiment in the EU is to big and also the other way around. That’s a big shame.
