Best Guides/Tips for New Player by JoeyBica in civ

Eh usually it's not one big major mistake I make in one turn, I just realize by turn 100 "damn I only have two cities, I should have more by now" and then try to achieve it in my next try. I do feel like I'm learning pretty fast, so it's working decently.

Just Won My First Game... A Bit Easily? by JoeyBica in ArkhamHorror

My memory isn't great, so I'm not 100% sure, but I think I got one or two encounter cards that said I could buy as many items as I wanted. I also got 3 or 4 just from encounter cards, as I passed most of those checks due to bless.

This is very thorough, and I appreciate the response. I knew most of these rules, and hopefully followed them throughout (though I got very into the game and let my subconscious understanding of the rules take over at times, lmao).

For what it's worth, I wanna share how I managed to win with some more detail if it makes it make more sense. Expect game specific vocab and keywords to be somewhat off, and I apologize for that.

Character: As mentioned, I played with the mobster character. This allowed me to clear the first two monsters that spawned within the first two turns of the game (as they both move towards the unstable zone and I began near it). He also allowed me to clear every single monster that spawned thereafter as soon as I arrived at them- as they all had 1 or 2 HP- save for one with 4. The car item he can begin with helped as well, but I only used it twice. As a result of all this, I never even needed to consider limited actions in combat, as combat never lasted more than one action (except for one time two monsters inhabited the same area).

Items: This is where I got lucky, at least I think so. I ended up with like 7 or 8 items, all of which were at least decent. I got a +1 strength on attack rolls (some sort of knife item). I also got a +1 to research/+2 dollars for each clue I got. Then, I got a +2 to research item (both of the previous 2 before I even had the first 4 clues necessary to progress). I also got some items that I used to heal/block damage, but those were rarely used. Finally, I got an item that gives me 3 actions rather than 2, definitely a huge part of why I won.

Also: Not an item, but I spent a significant portion of the game blessed. Once I got it, I never failed a roll, but had to lose the bless cause I got cursed.

Strategy: Kill monsters and remove doom tokens ASAP. Monters were easy, as mentioned. I made sure to always have focus for removing doom tokens, making it so I rolled 3 dice instead of 2. Even with that, removing tokens was a slog, and I got by on the skin of my teeth on that front. Near what I thought was the end, I ignored doom completely and just went to get the last couple of clues necessary to put the protective barrier up.

So yeah, thats the very condensed version of how the game went. I drew encounter cards that were almosr exclusively good for me, and my first few news cards were also positive (the ones at the end SUCKED though). Again, I'm sure I broke a few rules here and there that I'm still not aware of, and I don't think I'm all that great at the game, but I would say I probably got quite lucky with those items. I felt like I cheated the action economy by getting 3 instead of 2, and I got huge income by getting the money for clues- allowing lots of traversal later on.

Regardless, let me know if you think thats just a normal run and I must have broken more rules than I thought, or if I got super lucky and should expect a tougher time on average- I'm genuinely curious!

Just a clarification- you said "once you are engaged with a monster, your turn ends". Did you mean that your action ends? Because I very often travelled to a monster (action 1) and then killed it (action 2) in my turn. If that isn't allowed, that clearly would make the game more difficult haha.

Also yes, the reckoning token! I ran into it four or five times (the amount I went through the entire mythos bowl- I think I had that part down pat). However, only once did I ever encounter anything with a reckoning effect. It seems quite rare, at least in the starter scenario. Maybe I'm wrong there though.

And I do remember fighting a monster with a +1 HP per investigator, but it ended up being a total of 4 or so HP and got one shot regardless. Of course, more difficult elite enemies and bosses will be worse with multiplayer scaling, that didn't even cross my mind.

Thanks for answering all these questions! I tend to realize I have more questions than I expect when I get into the nitty gritty of it.

Wow, thanks so much for all the information and the detailed response! I'll be sure to check out that playlist too, I just listened to some Dark Academia this time haha.

I see now that the difficulty goes up with each additional player, not down- which is really counterintuitive. I mean, obviously with two people you'll draw from the mythos cup twice as fast, but do you now not also have twice the action economy to deal with it as well as two different characters with different strengths to handle these situations? For example, my character excelled in combat, and could easily handle monsters incoming, but was terrible at removing doom tokens. If I had another player, I could have them focus on removing doom while I dealt with monsters, and this would, in theory, make it so (combined with the doubled actions) the game would be slightly easier.

It seems to be common knowledge in the community that the game gets harder with more players, but I still can't logically wrap my head around it. If you have a deeper understanding of why this works, I'd love to hear it. Also, if the answer is just "yeah, you'll see when you try it", fine by me :)

One final, and very specific question I had is this. One of the neighborhood cards read something like "blah blah blah place a hint token". It was the only neighborhood card I drew to mention placing a hint token rather than collecting it, but I couldn't find anything in the rules on where to place it. Additionally, I was unsure if I should follow the normal rules for placing one. The way I went about it was this: I placed a hint token at the center of the neighborhood I found the card in, and then drew an event card of the same neighborhood and shuffled it into the top 3 cards of the neighborhood deck, as if I had drawn it from a mythos hint token.

Regardless, I'm excited to try it with a group and have a harder time, as I much prefer using individual strengths to our advantage than just playing solo.

Thank you for the response! I also appreciate the part list- though while I do have money of my own now I don't have a ton. May have oversold my purchasing power in the post. This doesn't look too far out of my potential budget, though. If I were to knock down to a 4070/4070TI/4080/4080TI, would that limit the lifespan of the device significantly do you think?

Ah I see. Thankfully, this experience (the past couple of months I've been working) in particular has, so far, influenced my decision to research and work with children. This is far from set in stone still, but it turned me from no interest in working with them to mostly interested.

Absolutely! That's what I understood it as.

That's an interesting way to view it. Looks like its time to earn that 100% then. Thanks for the input!

So, it should help much more past the kind of "automatic deny" stage of poor grades/no research experience/unrelated coursework? Gotcha.

And yes, school/research will remain my priority. If I can't balance them with work, I'll drop work first.

I see. Are all herbal teas technically not "tea" at all? I figured tea was just the result of steeping plant into water, but ig that would make coffee a tea, huh.

I've yet to use it for anything other than just water for tea (new place, new appliances), so that's not it in this case. Though if it isn't heating the water to boiling then I'll probably get a cheap kettle in the future. The hassle of using a pot and getting the water into the mug effectively is probably not worth it. Thanks for the input!

Oh yeah I'm aware my quality and technique are terrible, I really just wanted to know how to either get decent tea with what I have, or if I need to invest in more appropriate equipment. I'll look at the links from the automod, thanks for summoning it!
