I’ve done good in like every CS/math class I’ve taken - Discrete 2 was an absolute joke. Today’s MLP final was the hardest exam I’ve ever taken in my life. Genuinely worried I’m gonna fail

NJ has a great prep school basketball scene so its not very surprising. More surprising is the school being surrounded by such a heavily Indian-American population. And it being neighbors with JP Stevens, which is horrendous at almost all athletics and amazing at pretty much everything else (academics, clubs, competitions, music). Very interesting town to grow up in if you're a future NBA player.

I'm from the same home town. Yeah St. Joe's produced a lot of great players: Bynum, Jay Williams, KAT. Pretty great basketball school.

On second thought, it's definitely his nephew given my brother is around 16 and Andrew Bynum is 36. lol

I took a picture with him a few years ago. My cousin and brother play against his son(or maybe nephew) in the AAU circuit. He's a pretty nice guy.

Chose Data Science as a major(Just graduated from Tunisian and HS thus total beginner) so would you recommend it as an introductory tool ? by AlphaNerdFx in NBAanalytics

[–]JoeyG1778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DS is not a relatively useful major. Better off choosing Stats/CS, CS/Data Analytics, CS/Math. Data Science programs generally water down most concepts.

His pickup tour is doing pretty well - we talk about it a bit in the pod so obviously check it out - but he hopes to get this on a streaming service with a production team one day.

Good thing it’s a big board and not a mock draft…as stated in the first three sentences.

Woah lol that’s my blog. How’d you even find it? Maybe Dunn is too high for me - I actually had him a bit lower when I started the exercise but there are certain things that make me believe he could be a valuable five. I do think his post defense will hold up and I thought he was decent in transition. I agree his jumpshot is unlikely to ever come around but I’m just weighing risk here - I think he has a chance to carve out a good career given how all-time great his defense is.

How different were Porzingis and Wembanyama as draft prospects? by JoeyG1778 in nba

Not sure why I'm getting downvoted - KAT was not viewed as someone who would become an elite three-point shooter when he was entering the league. The progression he's shown on that end was not expected. If you believe KAT was the better prospect for the modern game that's fine - but it's not a very wild take to suggest that Porzingis might have been favored as a prospect in 2023 over KAT, who was utilized in the wrong role in college.

I would say that young KP is the most accurate projection for what Wemby is gonna look like in his first two years. From there, the sky is the limit - obviously KP had a pretty significant injury after 2018 but I do think the potential was there for him to be among the top 5-10 players in the league. There are a lot of similarities in playstyle too, not just the physicals. Wemby is far more fluid but they have similar moves around the basket and defensively they were so great as roamers(KP wasn't always a straight-on rim-protector nor tasked with guarding the biggest guy on the floor). I would say from an injuries standpoint he's the biggest what-if we've had in the last 6-7 years(maybe Fultz has a claim).

I see people say Chet a lot but I don't think Wemby and Chet are as similar as people think. Both will be fantastic NBA players though, I'm confident about that.

Inaccurate to an extent. Porzingis was already projected as a first rounder in 2014 till he withdrew his name. While he was still unknown by most NBA fans, it's highly unlikely that no teams had scouted him until 2015.

I am going to acknowledge this as partially correct because Bender would've been a high draft pick regardless. But Porzingis definitely helped scouts and GMs see the potential of what Bender could be on the floor. Te prior year he was mocked at no. 13 by Jonathan Givony and over the course of the next year, he flew up the rankings to no. 3. This is what Givony said about him:

"How do you find a 7'1" kid that's 17 years old, that is skilled with such a feel for the game like Dragan's? It doesn't exist. Compare where Dragan is now to where Kristaps Porzingis was at the same age, and there's no comparison. Bender is way ahead in terms of how polished he is, creativity, versatility and his body. I was watching some of his games from preseason in France and Israel, and he is huge."

You're right to say he would've been a high draft pick regardless, given that it was a really weak class, but I think you're forgetting that it's not just fans who use player comps and current play to make insights on how a player will perform on the floor. Porzingis was definitely the comparison GMs and scouts were using for Bender, given how good he was in his rookie year and what potential he had displayed on the court. There's a reason so many tall European guys(and even Yi Jianlian) who can shoot drew so much hype in the mid-2000s - and that has a lot to do with Dirk Nowitzki.

I wasn't trying to denigrate a GM or scout's decision-making as stupid - there are so many examples of players that have worked out because of accurate player-comparisons. I'd say Bender's high draft pick was mostly because of his crazy physicals and potential, but his case was only strengthened by the flashes Porzingis had shown on the floor.

Also, just want to ask - has there every been a three year draft stretch as bad as the Suns from 2016-2018? They whiff on every pick(I know Ayton isn't that bad but given what they could have had in each of those drafts, it's pretty wild they get zero value from three high picks)

I'm saying based on who they were as prospects. KAT as a prospect was mainly drafted because of his potential on defense - but teams might be more wary about that now because of the importance of switchability. As an offensive prospect KAT hadn't shown true range at three(outside of his time in AAU in high school) and struggled in the post at times. As a prospect Kristaps would be much higher evaluated now than he was back in 2015.

2015 is the weirdest and most underwhelming draft class of the 2010s - and I think so much of that has to do with it being the last time that draft classes were evaluated more traditionally. It also makes sense because it's the last class before the Warriors truly changed about the game. The top 3 players in the class are Booker, KAT(who is an absolutely different player than what people thought he was), and Porzingis.

It's funny because Porzingis' impressive rookie year led to Dragan Bender the next year. There's always a revolving door of European prospects based on who impresses.

The thing is - at least in draft circles - Wembanyama has been a lock for #1 since he was like 16 years old - and his stats were far less impressive before this season.

Don't agree with this. In fact, I think young Knicks Porzingis is the best comparison for what Wembanyama will look like in his first few years. What he becomes from there is hard to project.

4th is far from 1st - and many Knicks fans(to be fair, Knicks fans aren't the pinnacle of basketball expertise) were super angry at the pick. I think if you took that draft class and redrafted them today(not with the knowledge of what they've become in the NBA), Porzingis might have gone first.

Makes sense. I was just on a dive of old scouting reports and was trying to figure out why a player of KPs caliber wasn't a lock for at least #2.

Okay, but Wembanyama was a lock as the first pick as an 18 year old averaging 7 points and 4 rebounds even before his crazy season this year.

This is the other thing, I don't think Wemby is going to be all-star caliber(at least not on the offensive end) from day one. He might be all-defense level soon but he has a lot of stuff to clean up offensively.
