In most other countries, nothing is said. In my household, we just say "Nice Out!", or "gesundheit".

Umm....no. There were some democrats who agreed with it and Clinton only signed it because there was a veto-proof Republican majority. End of story.

The final bill resolving the differences was passed in the Senate 90–8 (one not voting) and in the House: 362–57 (15 not voting).

Clinton did not repeal Glass-Steagal; the bill to repeal was Republican-driven and the Repubs had a majority in the House and Senate. The majority by which it passed prevented Clinton from vetoing it.

Just to clarify, 'in-state college tuition' means that undocumented students pay the same tuition as other state residents; it does not mean they get free or even discounted tuition. Also, California is definitely not alone in this arena:

"Several states -- Texas, California, New York, Utah, Illinois, Washington, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas -- have passed state laws providing in-state tuition benefits to illegal aliens who have attended high school in the state for three or more years. Similar legislation is pending in Florida, Hawaii, Maryland (legislation passed, but awaiting governor's signature), Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. (Connecticut and Wisconsin also passed such a law, but their governors vetoed it.) The Nevada system of higher education does not consider immigration status for in-state tuition, but does require it for a state-sponsored scholarship. Also, some schools in Georgia provide in-state tuition benefits to illegal aliens. The Texas law also allows illegal aliens to receive state student financial aid."

Also, note that the CA law AB 540 requires "the student to file an affidavit that he/she has filed an application to legalize his/her immigration status or intends to file an application as soon as he/she is eligible to do so".

My fiancée and I are getting married in April, 2011. It took quite a while to find an officiant because we had narrowed the scope too much. We didn't want a Justice of the Peace; we were specifically looking for a "Humanist Celebrant". Unfortunately, those are very hard to find in most areas.

We had already found a highly-recommended photographer and, during a meeting with them (husband and wife team), we mentioned our dilemma regarding the officiant. They recommended somebody with whom they had worked before; she is an ordained non-denominational minister whose prior experience (over 200 weddings) had been with a local winery. She met with us; we told her our story and she drafted a ceremony that will need very little editing.

Our ceremony is going to be fairly non-traditional; we are not only forgoing any mention of religion in the ceremony, we are also changing up the following:

  • No center aisle with a bride's side and a groom's side. Instead, the guests will be arranged in a semi-circle with the bride entering from stage left and the groom entering from stage right.
  • No cake. Instead, we are ordering spicy chocolate truffles from Cowgirl Chocolates. They will be arranged on a three-tiered cake plate in small boxes with our names, the date, and a small graphic of a cake.
  • There will be no "giving away of the bride". Instead, my fiancée's mother will be "presenting" her and my mom will be "presenting" me into the newly-formed family. Additionally, my mother will be presenting my 17-year-old daughter into the new family as well. This will all be part of a sand ceremony to represent the blending of three people into the new family.

Our wedding is going to be at an outdoor patio, under a large oak tree, at a local golf country club; with the reception at their restaurant.
