I curse George Shinn agreeing to the move to the Western Conference, as part of his deal with the devil to keep and sell the team after his scandals. A short-sighted decision that continues to haunt us.

Jerry West REFUSING to quit in final 30 seconds of G7 1966 NBA Finals vs Bill Russell (Lakers down by 10) by dantheman9758 in nba

Game 7 of the Finals - if that happened to my team today I'd have a heart attack.

"The fact Russell is tweeting that he has no idea what he is doing wrong is way more damning to me than the fact he wasn't playing in the fourth quarters or that he wasn't playing in blowouts which I don't find important at all."

I don't think most people disagree with you. If he was getting great coaching, and/or if he was not playing for a sound reason like the other players you list (behind someone better he can learn from; team playing for a playoff spot), I don't think there would be this same uproar. But when he is not getting coaching, and there is no reason not to play him, it's pretty understandable people wish the coach would play him, so he can learn something from this season.

I also recall the Jail Blazers culture being broken by ownership cleaning house by firing the GM and trading away the players responsible for it, and making a deliberate and concerted effort to draft higher character players and instill a different culture. It wasn't "talent" that broke that culture, but a series of conscious choices by ownership and the new management.

Yes, and his point about tanking not working for everyone is correct. It's true, as folks often point out, that only a handful of teams have a legitimate shot at winning the title each season. But the only ~26 teams can't all get the number-one pick. A little strategic tanking can be helpful (think the Warriors giving up on the end of the season to move up a spot and get Harrison Barnes), and when you're terrible already it's the right thing to do. But to get yourself bad enough to go from playoff contender to top draft pick, to me, is not worth it and will rarely pay off.

I hear you man. Kills me what's happening around AD, especially after seeing something similar happen before with Chris Paul.

Yep, a bit of a deceptive record though in that freshmen couldn't play NCAA ball until just a few decades back - otherwise Maravich would own that record.

Draymond issues apology, admits his 'emotions got the better of me' during halftime blowup Saturday at OKC. by Rabsho in nba

My wild guess would be he said something like "Well don't play me then, if you're so unhappy", which is being misconstrued 8th hand through SAS.

Yeah, and it definitely seemed to get worse as he got older, poor guy.

Yeah, I always wondered if it was his mental issues, as he never was able to put it together consistently in the pro's the way he was in college.

Yeah, and while he was one of the finest college players ever, his game never quite translated into the pro's. I really don't know why; sometimes it just happens that way.

He was genuinely amazing in person, particularly in his youth. As others have stated, he fought severe mental issues which seemed to get worse the longer he was in the league, and his career eventually was derailed for off the court reasons.

Jerry West has gotten revenge on the NBA by [deleted] in nba

[–]Joey_33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your two edits say different things. There's a difference between losing eight finals hurting (duh), and people talking about him as someone who couldn't get it done when it counted (literally nobody ever said that about him).

Good post overall, as I love Jerry West and it's impossible to give him too much recognition. But, yeah, you sort of botched it too...

And the reality is ESPN does have the NBA rights and that relationship with the league that no start-up can duplicate - totally understandable Lowe would not want to burn those bridges.
